Hi all -
KJ6FNP here - newly licensed and taking in all the interesting information and ideas. Great to have such a helpful community, worldwide nonetheless!

So, my son is interested in amateur radio and was wondering if there was a receiver that he could keep in his room to just listen. He wants something to listen not only to amateur (regulated) as well as CB, etc.

I don't mind spending a bit of money for something decent, and, I don't mind putting up a longwire antenna, if that is necessary, but not sure...

So, here's what I am asking:
  • Are there receivers that will receive such a wide set of frequencies (we don't need ALL freqs)?
  • Do I need to put up just a simple longwire antenna for such a receiver?

Any thoughts, recommendations or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Nice starter receivers

R&L Electronics 800-221-7735

R&L Electronics 800-221-7735

Here is just a couple...Not to "pricey"...
I have a ATS808 earlier version of 909...great little receiver!...Had it for many years.
There are many others...search "Shortwave receivers"....make sure what you purchase can receive "SSB" Single Sideband...This will let you listen on the Ham/CB bands and be able to tune all signals.

You can spend much more depends how you wish to you it...most portables like these work fine with pull up or table top antennas...but a long wire around the room or to a tree out a window, even better.
Enjoy

There are lots of deals to be had on ebay, too. Here's a nice little grundig receiver, that should work great:

GRUNDIG G5 AM FM SHORTWAVE RADIO SSB IN BOX + 3 EXTRAS - eBay (item 360241626880 end time Apr-06-10 22:01:58 PDT)

All you really need to do is get some wire in the air to get better reception than is possible with the telescoping whip. In fact, this would be a good learning tool for your kid. Have him make a few different types of wire antennas so he can hear the effect it has on reception.

Super! Thanks for the pointers... I don't want to spend a ton of $$$ until he commits to getting his license - if he does that, well then... that's a different story. :w00t:
