hello everyone , im new to the forum and have some questions. i have a uniden hr2510 i use for my hunt club in virginia and the club is switching over to vhf radios . this may be a dumb question but i just dont know. could my 2510 be tuned for vhf or do i need a new radio and if so any suggestions ? i want a good quality powerful radio. also some of the guys are telling me you need a computer to progam these vhf's . any help would be appreciated . thanks in advance

You need a new radio to work the VHF bands.

The HR2510, though it is a very nice radio, is tuned for HF and will not work for VHF.

You can either get a business band mobile and have someone program it via computer, or you can look for a 2 meter amateur radio mobile that is capable of expanded transmit and program your frequency into it yourself. It's not exactly the legal way to do it, but I doubt that the hunt club has gone through the licensing process with the FCC to secure the channel they are using anyway.

thanks for your help! what about antenna . do these vhf's use regular coaxel like my wilson 1000 or do i need a new antenna also?

Yes, you will need a new antenna. I would recommend a 5/8ths wavelength for VHF. This antenna has a bit of gain and will perform well. I recommend a Larsen NMO150 antenna. You can get a mag-mount for this antenna, but I recommend a permanent mount such as a trunk-lip mount. You may not find these antennas at any CB shop; you'll need to visit a land-mobile dealer or a ham radio store to find one. There are some CB dealers who carry ham radio "2-meter" radios that might carry a 5/8ths wavelength "2-meter" antenna, but you wil have to specifically ask for it. Those dealers may not carry the Larsen brand, but might carry something like "Browning" or "Tram" brands.

Just keep in mind that the fcc has been going after hunters for using VHF marine and ham radio for hunting. The most practical radio is MURS, don't need a license for it. Can use 2 watts with mobile antennas.
