HR2600 has a blown final..recommended repacements ?

Hi Roger,

I have just been given a HR2600 to work on, the original description was that there was a spark from the antenna socket when the coax was plugged in, which immediately made me think about DC at the antenna socket, I was also told that someone else has had a play to try and fix it, they removed the earth connection from the power plug.

Anyway, I scoped the final and driver, the final is definately gone, I also found that some idiot had cut the track where the RF output from the final is routed just before it goes through the SWR bridge PCB, and later bridged the cut with a wire, I suspect this was the cause of the blown final.

Anyway, now I need to hear recommendations about a suitable replacement final, seeing as the MRF477 is no longer around, or too expensive, I have seen posts about using a MRF455, which is an option, but I want to try and keep the costs down for the owner, he seems to have been ripped off a bit when he purchased it.

So if anyone has done any final replacements on a HR2600, HR2510 etc. I want to hear from you about how it went, I am going to try some things with parts I have available here, but would prefer to have a tried and proven substitute.

I would go with the MRF455.

The mod is not that hard, and certainly will out live the radio.

With a simple mount it and solder wires to the PCB, Remembering to

'STRAP' the Emitter to the mounting screw, you should get Nominal output 10W AM /25W SSB.

You can bump it up a little by removing C132.

as well as other tweaks...

I have been able to buy MRF455 for as little as $12.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the advice, I dont have any MRF455 here, I will have to get some for the next time I get one of these with a blown final.

I have had a go at using a relatively cheap and easily sourced part instead, the 2SC1969, although its pinout is slightly different (C and E reversed) I was able install it and got it working, the initial problem after installation was severe negative modulation, I had to remove one of the capacitors of a pair of capacitors that went between earth and the final base (C174/C175) I also lifted one leg of C115 (100pF) that connects between earth and the junction of L15 and L16, this fixed the problem and increased the power output.

I was able to set the AM TX power as high as 20 Watts, but obviously, this made the modulation sound VERY bad, After setting bias's and such I found the highest power output with 100% modulation was about 7 Watts, SSB was able to achieve 23 Watts.

Maybe this will help someone else out as well.

I will have to make to note of that, the M R F 477 could be handy to have, I would rather replace with the same part than substitute something else, I seem to be getting a lot of the HR2510,2600, Lincoln to repair recently, they seem to be failing these days (not refering to units currently for sale), over here (in my country) they are the early versions that have been around for a long time, so seem to be suffering from part failures now.

Do you ship to New Zealand ? I know some companies either wont ship outside the US or require extreme measures to be taken to prove the ID for credit card use etc. photocopies of everything, including my undies <img src=http://users.joplin.com/dutch64804/wow.gif ALT=":wow">

Frank, it is a bug in the Spell-check, if you hit space after MRF, It should prevent it.
