HWV 160m. compare to an inverted L?

Been there, done that, got the photo's to prove it too, look at qrz.com under my call PA5COR for the pictures.

My helically wound 160 meter vertical was actually 45 feet high in the end, and end capacity was 2 x 12 meter or 36 feet wires from the top angled downwards to 10 meters high.
Then i had about 1000 feet of ground radials laid out, and the vertical worked fine on 160.
Results weren't too bad, Europe, Eurasia with 5000 - 6000 miles, USA Canada from Europe in Phone.

Went for the picture lower, the inverted L of 77 feet high, and another 77 feet running to the trees at 12 meter high, or 40 feet up.
Went full crazy and put in total 3000 feet of radials in every nook and cranny i got it in.

Working 6000 - 8000+ miles quite fine running 800 watts from the FT 2000 D and Heathkit SB-1000, Phone too.
For the low bands you need long big antenna's the helically wound monobander is fine as start up antenna for 160 provided you get radials in and get it high enough.
C.W. will work the world with tht setup, though getting a good recieve antenna is also important, K9AY loops, beverages if you have the space etc.

The L is fed with the MFJ 998 autotuner at the bottom feeding the L directly.
That way i can tune it on 160/80/40/20, for all bands there is a OCF antenna as well, and higher as 20 i use another vertical givng better results there as the inverted L.

That way i have on any of the bands 2 different antenna's to use and see what's best with the propagation that is there at that moment.

:D

I was planning to build a 160m loop, but just don;t have enough tie off points

That does suck. The loop would be easiest to make and put up. I've had 1 before for 160M and I know it's tough to come up with room for over 500' of wire.

My current loop is 80M meeting my space requirements too.

Good luck!
