I'd like to get involved with world wide information, as so many of you folks are. I am in Northwestern /wisconsin, surrounded by 360 acres of timer. I've been an operating gunsmith for 50+ years, and have a website, www.saronagunworks.com.
I'd love to hear from you folks who know what's best to set up a radio, or base system, here. What do I need to acquire to get there? I've learned a long time ago to buy what's best and only cry once, so I have developed a thick skin over the years
Would appreciate any of your good direction, and hopefully make some new friends who enjoy "world wide" communication and informative "gun talk"

Thanks for your time,
Dennis @ Sarona Gun Works LLC

I have a lot of posts, but it’s not indicative of the quality of advice. I know mobile installations & use as a truck driver, but (hell) someone ought to get you started.

CB Radio is a great tool (my experience). For others, it’s the gateway to Amateur licensing. Serious hobbyists. So that’s question #1

1). Eleven Meter (mobile & base) as a start to the big boy stuff?

2). Intention is maybe some AM, but the engaging interest is Sideband? (True of many here).

3). The big question is the antenna system. A few $ or a five gallon bucket stuffed with $100 bills. (Or something in between).

Height is Might is an old saying about antennas, seems obvious. That’s where some moolah comes in.

— I’ve kept in mind a rule of thumb for planning where the antenna tower (whatever apparatus chosen) for Eleven Meter ought to be a wavelength away from structure and the antenna feedpoint ought to be a wavelength above ground level.

Your desire to Do It Once, and Do It Right is the commendable approach. But what you want it to be able to do well, . . . gets more complicated.

IMO, if some structure is contemplated then complementary systems study is recommended:

A). Station Grounding

B). Antenna System Ground

These are not exclusive of one another. [A] is mandatory. is more a matter of where & what constitutes your antenna. Simpler to more complex.

Maybe (said with respect) you just want a good ol’ boy base station and something for the car where it shouldn’t ought to be too complicated (is the feeling you’re experiencing).

— Or maybe you want to talk Skip to overseas operators.

— And have ZERO intention of becoming licensed, etc.

Well, much of the big boy stuff applies (radio is radio) so it’s sorta a matter of how big/complicated a base station antenna you’re willing to fool with.

Gonna have to fill in the blanks as this little coral-hugger fish goes back invisible. One a them big ol’ goliath groupers ought to be along after you’ve given more info to better fill in those blanks.

Little bit more information????
You want to keep in touch with the rest of the world?? As in SWL short wave listening to broadcast bands from around the world?

Or you want to get involved in radio hobby for communications??
Your short term and long term goals are???

Just few answers and then can make some recommendations.
It can be as simple as a battery, radio and a wire for a simple inexpensive setup,.

Or tower and yagi antenna and a multimode multi band transceiver, it is all up to what you want to do.
welcome to the hobby

So many options, most folks are using ham radio with Mars mod, expensive way to start in my opinion, you will need a power supply, amplifier, base unit transeiver, antenna, antenna pole, coax, swr meter maybe antenna analizer, you can start with a simple mobil radio and basic ground plane and figure out your needs from there, get on the air and see what you like, talk to other operators and see what they are using before plunking down thousands of dollars , what is best for Mikey may not be what is best for you and visa versa,

Smells like spammer account from a mile. Just to advertise website.

Well, if you want to debate rimfire pistol sear springs he’s your guy. Meaning, while there’s merit to the point made above, it’s a small market cares about customized .22

Could be he’s sorta forgotten. He’ll get ‘roun to it another day.

Meanwhile there’s those pink .22-LR pistols to get into the mail for Momma Day.

If you want Dependable World Wide Communications then get the Study Materials for the Technician & General Class Amateur Radio License. There is no other way to have dependable communications around the world on a daily basis.I have been into CB radio since 1965 & Amateur Radio since 1994 & CB is so far behind it's laughable.I can talk around the world most any time of the day or night on Amateur Radio & RARELY ever on the CB.GMRS is great if you just need short to Mid-Range communications but it requires a license as well but no testing for it.I have approximately $10,000 inverted in just Amateur Radio & GMRS gear so I take it pretty seriously so I don't need to repeat myself.Radio is a great hobby as is shooting & I enjoy both from Airguns to centerfire rifles.Welcome to the group & God Bless from Florida & 2A State.
