I did the AT-6666 thing..

Due to my idiocy. My order hopefully processes today and gets to my tech by Thursday evening with 'Prime'.

He's going to set for a clean wave and about 50/50 AM and SSB for me.

We had some discussions on this back and forth and 45-50 still delivered clean waves for him on these in past experience with the same model.

A clean 45-50 is better than a crappy splattering 70-75 some techs are doing IMO.

I figured also I can get out with the R296 doing 8-10w on SSB and skip, so 45-50 should help abit with some pileups..

Was pondering maxing out 2 CC for a TS500 and just run it with my Ranger 296 which gets great audio reports, but the $500 and then a bigger PS kinda killed that thought.

Also the ex-wife got me a $20 Amzn gift card for my b-day on Sunday, so the radio is $241 shipped with tax and all after the 5% too they had on it.

Stay tuned.

You'd probably be happy with it straight outta the box. Mine certainly didn't need any fingers in it.

I figured give it a once over on scope and see how it looks on AM and SSB. He just sets if for a clean wave on 'tones' and that's it. For $35 I'm not going to argue, I'd rather have it clean.

He also post all his work as he does it on video which is nice. He mentioned Max Mod option for $50, but I'm on a 'no budget' so I declined.

It's out for his shop delivery today. So if he gets it done this afternoon or evening I should have it in hand by Friday or Saturday.

I just don't understand the principle of buying something for x amount and then before you even use it you need to spend x more to make it work "right". The 706MKIIG I have, out of the box and have never opened it, ICOM 2000h, out of the box and never opened up. This is not a slam at anyone just don't get it. If these radios are so poorly manufactured then don't buy then?

Enjoy your radio and I hope it works the way you want.

(I only mention those to rigs because they are the only two I ever bought new)

He's a friend of mine and offered to check and adjust for $35. It's no worse than my Ranger 296 needing an alignment after like 30 years and that was like $75-90 from another radio tech a few months back.

I could have just ran this as is. But what not try and get it 'proper' as not to splatter. If I ever decide to pop a TS500 on it then at least I know it started clean..

I've seen before videos of some of the 6666 and some waves were squared off because someone just cranked it up for watts. That's not what I wanted.

You also have to keep in mind these are not $600+++ HF rigs so they should all probably be checked at time of mfg, but there not.

It does seem that the majority of 10m rigs are not tuned from factory adequately for SSB use. They are sometimes close but frequently not. Unfortunately this goes for most if not all CB and Export 10m radios out there today. As for power that is up to the user but for sure a proper and dedicated alignment of the TX and RX circuits will help. They just don't have enough time during manufacture to get it 'just right'. Re-sellers should do this as a service before selling a radio, but most don't, won't, can't. People these days just want to cheap no matter what.

Actually they are tuned correctly for 10 meters, it's when you want to use them off band is when things go out of wack. From what I have read here the dedicated 11 meter radios work fine, i.e the uniden 980 for example.

Plan on occasional 10m use as well. So this my official 10/11m rig as my A99 is setup semi-widebanded.

The radio came in. Shows me 60w on SSB with a whistle and my normal voice modulation between 20-42w or so.

Many great audio reports this evening with it.

I did some freeband down to 26.755 even and up to 27.435 on AM and SSB all said it sounded great.

I tried the factory mic and my Superstar CM4 (Cobra knockoff).

Everyone said sounded good

I did notice more swing with the factory mic over the 500-600ohm CM4 and that's expected as its Dynamic and not Electret.

I've heard several on the air recently. They sound really good. My locals give me favorable reports. It's been the best performing mobile I've had in a long while. Interesting to see how this model progresses. I think the stock mic feels good in the hand.

I have one of Lescomm's as a mobile and has really worked well during the recent 10m openings. Always get good reports, even with the stock mic.

One thing for certain Al aka CB590. You and your AT-6666 were loud and clear this afternoon coming from Catskill Mtns. NY down here to Central NC. Fine sounding station! (y)
