Does anyone have any experience with using an Icom 706 MKII on the CB side?

How do they sound and can you adjust the carrier for a 1 to 4 swing?

It can be modified for use on 27 Mhz, had one but that's been some time ago. Can't honestly say how well it worked, but it did work and I didn't get any huge complaints about it. Read the manual about AM mode operation! That's the best advice. And believe what it says, that's even better advice. Another good piece of advice is to don't modify the thing any more than you absolutely have to! IT will take care of modulation to carrier ratios all by it's self, just pay attention to what the book says and use some 'conservative' sense about things.
I don't have the '706 anymore. It just required too much attention to make changes when moving for me. They have some very nice features, which you'll probably never use, and several that you probably will use. It's not a bad radio, just didn't suit me.

(Besides, if you ain't got Kenwood, you got squat. Right?) ;)

cajun, i bought a new icom 706mk2g here a few months ago and did the transmit expansion myself. its just taking a real small diod off the board. google it. ive talked some on 27mhz. am and was told it sounds good and clear. have talked some on 38lsb to but not alot. i bought it mainly to use on ssb. does it sound as good as my old washington base on am.??? dont know but it didnt sound bad. ssb is where alot of the hf rigs shine. love the thing though.

Hi Cajun Invader,

To start with the 706 MKIIG is a Great little radio indeed..

It is very easy to modify for 11 meter band.
However leave everything else alone (there is no need to modify anything else..it is designed to work as it is set from the factory)

I have had mine for several years and have gotten countless excellent reports on how well it sounds and performs.

Mind you though...This is not really designed for am use (even though it sounds good on am) it really excels on SSB though.

I used the 706 MKIIG yrs before getting my ham ticket and used it exclusively for 38 LSB ... In using it on 38 LSB i have spoken all over the world with it and did so rather easily.

I have found the Best mike to use with the 706 MKIIG is simply the hand held mike it comes with....even using Icoms own SM-20 desktop power mike did not do as well as the stock hand mike.

Mine right from the factory puts out 135 watts...i would never consider doing any type of peak/tuning to it.

It is not a hard radio to use..
I do not use it that much ( being i also have the IC-7000 )

What i have found surprising was that basically if i heard them i could work them (98% of the time)..so i came to realize i spoke further then i typically could hear ( and i heard lots).

Only when i Got the IC-7000 did i start being able to hear people who did not persay hear me ( i dropped to maybe a 85% if i heard them i worked them)..

I would however say you should likely have a 35 or better amp power supply (even though they say it runs at 20 amps)..
When using less then a 35 amp power supply it at times seemed lacking in performance (mostly i use a 45 amp power supply though).

Anyways
Ask if any other questions regarding the 706 MKIIG

Thanks for all the information. I'm slowly making the transition over to Ham so I have been curious how the Icom sounding on AM.

I hope I don't get kinda snobby.

The 706 MKIIG was my lead into ham as well
after a few months using it..
I realized i needed to be able to use all those other frequency's

many in ham radio are indeed snobby
many are not though

keep the faith .. lol
