I've got an icom 706mkII and just acquired a mkIIG, any thoughts on if I should keep the G or sell both to fund a 7000. I do use 70cm so if you have any other suggestions it needs to cover everything.

The 706 is a very nice radio, still alot of them out there in use every day....

The 7000 is a very nice radio but it is a bit higher in price than some of the other station in a box radios

Since you are wanting 440 mhz as well a Yeasu 897 / 857 might be what you are after and they are a bit less expencive than the 7000 or maybe the Kenwood 2000

Thanks for the reply, I should have said its for mobile use so the Kenwood is a no go. Also the Yaesu's for me don't lend themselves to being mounted how I'd like with either too small a screen or buttons on top of the unit. So picked up a 7000 today and will be getting the 2x 706 on eBay asap.

I changed from an IC706 mkII to an IC7000, very happy with the performance, although neither are used for V/UHF, I still have the IC706, it's a good back up ;)

Congratulations on the 7000! The 7000 is a great rig, lots of features, the DSP is great, and built-in RTTY decoder too.

BIG NOTE: The rig requires 13.8 volts and 23A or more for proper operation. I am using an Alinco DM330MVT 30A Switching Power Supply. Many ops comment about the rig running hot. I would attribute this to running less than the 13.8 Volts which drives up the current consumption. If less than 13.8 V, then the rig puts out somewhere between 50 to 75 Watts. I’ve been using the rig for over 5 years without any trouble in both home and mobile. For mobile I use the Tarheel II (the better half doesn’t mind the size) for HF and a dual band whip for VHF/UHF.

How do you find the v/uhf reception? Only got the radio set up today but it seems pretty poor. Also disappointed with the scan function :(
