The most notable difference I can recall is that on the G model, they added 440 band. Also, a bunch of bug fixes over the years. I remember one bug on the older models was that the speech compressor stayed on, even when you went to 2m FM. On the newer models the indicator still shows, but the radio disables the compressor. Maybe others remember more differences...

Having using both the 847 and the ts-2000 I opted to keep the ts-2000. Look at the cost this way, with the 847 you must purchase the extra filtering where as it is included with the ts2000, on the 847 you then decide if you want to use the filter on tx or rx or buy yet another collins filter and have both,,,,,,, the TXCO is OPTIONAL on the 847 and again is included on the ts-2000. The ts-2000 has abuilt in antenna tuner. They both do satellite. the ts 2000 will cross band repeat and has the sky command feature which is an awesome type of cross band which allows you to "crossband" to your HT on the HF bands and be able to control the ts-2000 from the same HT. And another thing nice about the 2000 is the dual receive, if you have never used a radio with dual rx you dont know what your missing! the 847 has dual vfo and dual display but not dual rx. ADD all those together and see what the 847 will cost?

I have to disagree with that about not being up on technology, look at the TS480 for example they offer VOIP INCLUDED with the radio yes I had one of those as well, I could connect the 480 to the pc with the supplied software and from work I could connect to my radio from my laptop and using a mic on the laptop,, control and talk on the ts480,,,,,,,,,not that I would ever do that on compant time <img src=http://users.joplin.com/dutch64804/posticon28.gif ALT=":28">

I am looking to purchase a "real radio" and have seen several different versions of the infamous Icom 706 (706,MkII,G,etc)

What are the most notable differences/improvements that have been made as these model changes have progressed?

Thanks in advance...CDX727
