Icom IC-7000?

I was weighing which rig I'd like the most for a mobile... for me, I was on the fence with the 857D because of the tiny display and lack of filters, so I thought the Icom 7000 would fill the bill having a larger display and adjustable filters built in. The 7100 is just too new for me to roll the dice.

I already have a dual band FM rig, so I guess I don't really have to have a do-it-all mobile rig. Just when I thought I had it figured out! I have a bunch of points on my AMEX that are burning a hole in my pocket, and was going to use them towards the purchase of the Icom 7000.

Now I may reconsider the 857D, or I could go with a Kenwood TS-480SAT... or do I toss the Icom 718 in the mobile and buy a new HF base unit... arghhhh!

My vote goes to the 480 sat.

Ok, do you mind telling me why? I've heard these rigs on the air and they do sound good. I like the ability to remote mount the unit and just use the face.

You allready have the vhf/uhf covered and the 480 has a lot of easy to use functions while mobile.
I recently ditched a yeticom optima ll and put my 480hx. Nice big easy to read face while driving. Once you get your fav freqs programmed in, it only takes a second to change freqs.

That sounds good... 'cause I LOVE my V-71A in the mobile. The 480 does seem to have a nice big display. Still considering getting a new base rig and putting the Icom IC-718 in the mobile. And that opens up a whole other can of worms.

What are you using for an antenna in your mobile?

For 10 metres, the good old fashion SS whip. For 80, 40, 20 I'm using Hustler for now. I have some HD quick disconnects. You have to stop but its good for the present time. When I put a topper on the truck then maybe a screwdriver antenna.

So these are the Hustler resonators. I have a friend that uses Hamsticks, and he says they work ok on 20 and 40. I may look at buying the Hustlers and just use them with my existing setup. Predator I-10K has worked surprisingly well on 10 meters without any additional tuning/pruning. I have heard of some guys running at 102" whip and using a tuner to get 12 and 15. Don't know how well it works, I've just heard they are doing it.

Screwdrivers sure are convenient, that's for sure... but you've got to pony up a lot of dough to do the whole setup.
