5-letter coded groups were used by the military in the 1960s and much earlier.  From the way you described things, apparently the transmitting station had an AM transmitter and was modulating it with an audio tone - almost what would be called "Modulated Continuous Wave", or MCW.  For real MCW, however, the carrier and the audio signal would have to be keyed at the same time.

 

This clip is just AM modulated with a Morse-code audio signal, not "MCW".

 

You would need the proper code book or other decryption device to translate this into something understandable.
