I personally think there is a whole lot of hogwash about some beam antennas and reality with  real world operation. I found to see any real significant forward gain or signal strength gain  between a 5/8ths wave vertical or comparable you have to go to 5 element beam  or more I’ve played around with 2,3 & 4 element  beam Antennas and a Maco V5000 and saw absolutely no difference in signal gain between the 2 3 or 4 element beam and the Maco V5000 all were at 52’ only advantage I saw was the ability to null out unwanted signals with the beam  but as far as signal strength in the direction I pointed the beam VS the V5000 no difference between the 2,3and 4 element beam antennas vertically. I’m now running a Maco 5 element HV dual polarity antenna and see a 1.50 S Unit more deference in transmit and Receive with the station that’s is 70 miles away between it and the Maco V5000 with a 150 watt RCI 2970.
