Can the receive be improved on these antennas? Compared to a metal antenna are they that noisy on receive?

Welcome to the forum Bearcat. IMO, I believe the Imax/A99 do seem to have a higher basic noise level that is detectable in my operations of my radio, and at times this is worse than others. Personally I think I notice this more-so when conditions are said to be generally good, low signal on the meter, and nice and quite like at night-time.

On the other hand, when conditions are generally noisy, with a high meter reading, and your radio is buzzing with noise like during the daytime, I don't think it matters much what the type of antenna is, or what it is made of. For sure, I don't think this noise phenomenon has much of anything to do with the antenna just being made and supported in fiberglass...as many operators seem to claim.

I also think my Starduster and Astroplane type antennas, without matching devices...tend to be generally quieter. Other's also make similar claims about Quad type antennas being quieter.

It is also possible that at 11 meters we might just have noise to deal with at times due to a lot of unknown things going on around our station. If you have excessive noise and given some time this noise does not go away or diminish...it may be time to reconsider antenna location, a different antenna, and/or possible excessive RF interference in your area.

Some are able to check their area for noise by testing with a mobile setup and driving around to see if there are quieter areas nearby.

Good luck and keep us posted,

Hello Marconi...i have studied tour research throughout the years...i was AKA known as badwhiskey on another forum....but anyways I was just wondering if there was anything I could do like (grounding) to lower the noise on the Imax...i don't own a base antenna yet...i have used A99 and maco v58...thanx

You will just have to try grounding to see if it will help you at your location. Some say, if physical grounding helps...you still have an issue, or you unknowingly changed something in the process that fixed the problem.

Don't take my advice and never try your own ideas though.

Good luck,

What is your typical noise difference switching back n forth between Imax vs say your starduster?

I have seen an S5 on the Imax/A99 go down to S2 and maybe less at times. The AstroPlane and my Gain Master are also quite. Sometimes I can hear and copy signals on the SD' and A/P that I can only hear and not copy 100% on the Imax, but I think when that happens conditions are pretty good on the quiet side.

I have some videos below: just click on the YouTube link in my signature below and you may see some of this.

I will check those out...although I have watched alot of your videos...seems you like your starduster the best as long as u can get your antennas all equal Tip-to-Tip...they seem to all work equally well....i like a quiet antennas...i wouldn't mind building a moxon ...for clean receive and rejection...but back to the Imax...maybe grounding and ground radials might drop the noise floor?

I also think IMAX is marginally noisier than my GM but not by much. Have a read of this...I am not sure of the truth of the matter but the guy doing the models (quite dated) seems to know what he is talking about as he is a broadcast engineer.
