Which is better? I plan in putting my antenna in a tree. I have a IMAX now and it seems like I can't hear worth a flip. Which one would be better for hearing and transmitting?

If you can't hear with that antenna; then you must be doing something else wrong.
Using some crappy coax that is too long for the installation - maybe?
The antenna is not completely above the tree?
No 10 ft metal mast mounting the Imax to the tree?

Lots of possible reasons for that not hearing well. If you put another antenna in the same place with the same basic setup, it'll probably behave the same way. So, I would suggest 'curing' the present problems before trying another antenna. Easier said than done, right? Oh well...

Another possibility is the receive section on your radio is not strong or has a component problem.

Agree that if you're having RX problems with a 5/8 antenna high up off the ground....the problem is somewhere else.

Good luck

007_man, if you've always had a problem with hearing at this installation, and it has to do with excessive noise, then you could have a common mode currents (CMC) problem with the Imax. The Imax is reported to work, base on its production of CMC, and this condition seems to vary in magnitude due to particular heights above Earth, and/or lengths of feed line.

Uncontrolled CMC's are reported to aggravate problems relative to static, and man made noises...associated with RF on the feed line. If this is the type of issue you have, then changes in height, feed line length, and antenna design or construction can intensify or help minimize such problems.

Your current installation may also be located in an area, that I refer to as "a dead spot." In my experience, when this happens the antenna just doesn't seem to perform, and RX signals seem attenuated and are noticeable. This problem can be checked and compared using a mobile setup, and/or by considering reports from other nearby base operators...relative to commonly known nearby signals to both stations. This situation may not be likely, but it is possible.

well i never had a imax up in a tree .but i do have a sirio 2016 and its a
much better antenna imho. alot less whoite noise . i bought the sirio
without much knowledge on it .but gotta say i,ll never own another imax
