i had to open up another 5k coil last year to once again tighten the nut on top due to a loose connection .this time i was able to save the coil and reuse it .
wasnt easy though .even after the repair it did fail me about a month or so ago and i once again replaced it with another coil .
just thought you would like to see the new pictures .
enjoy!!

the nut on top gets loose alot .if you notice your swr`s flopping around this could very well be your issue .
best way to test it is to put a s meter inline .key the radio ,reach out and pull the whip over and let it fly .if the swr hits the red at any time during that test the nut is probably loose .
it would be normal for the swr to fluctuate but at no time should it hit the red .
this is my second coil that had this issue now .when it started acting up again a month or so ago i just scrapped it .grabbed another used one on ebay.

i soon might just switch over to the sirio.

thanks good info

i must be missin some thing...

would tightning the nut not solve the problem?

yes i tightened the nut and even used loctite on it .but some months later i started having issues again and decided to scrap it and start over with another one .

i am beginning to wonder whats under the plastic sheathing running up the middle .maybe its failing under there somewhere as well??

when this next one goes thats going to be the next set of pictures .

i think going thru drive thru`s hitting tree branches,ect,ect.....puts stress on that tower section and maybe something under that plastic is failing as well .

cool

i'm very carefull not to bang mine around, but i have had to dissamble the mag base and reattach the coax after a severe auto collision that broke the coax...

your pictures show the silver coating on the coil very well which is one reason i have not bought the sirio and stuck with this one...but i don't want your thread to become a discussion on that, cuz that could be a whole 'nother thread.

good luck and keep us posted

i do not believe the brass post goes all they down thru the sheathing .i think it gets substantially smaller whatever is running underneath there .
i never ventured that far but when this current one fails me i will totally take it apart and get pictures.

Nice photos and subject!

Think I would toss the old nut and waster/replace, wire brush off all of the oxidation, and use some teflon grease. Then re-assemble it.

Had a local friend that had to throw away a couple of these base loads because the corrosion inside was just too massive. These loads do need periodic maintenance!

In that last pic the nut looks like it's on backwards.
The curved side is down.
Shouldn't it be the other way around?

I'm assuming none of that gook is dielectric, just hot glue?

sorry if i missed an earlier post, I'm at work ready to bail...

.

some more food for thought

Looking at pics 1-2-3-4- & 6, where the coil enters the tap hole...there looks like the possibility of a small gap there.

what if the tap was off a hair and the coil is loose instead?

just an idea.
