I was accused by Charter Communications of downloading a movie last year because Universal said someone they hired to monitor Demonoid dl's monitored me doing it. I told Charter that someone probably hacked my wireless router or spoofed my IP address. What could they say except "oh ok...sorry to bother you".? IP addresses don't hold water in court anyway. The ONLY way you can be convicted of internet piracy is if they seize your PC and find the stuff on there. You have to be an idiot to do that much downloading and draw attention as a major pirate.

Still blows that ISP's would play this game.

Evidence like that is highly circumstantial. All they can tell is information went to an IP address. Anyone who has done any research can explain any number of ways that it didn't necessarily go to you. If it wasn't directly on one of your storage drives they have no real case, unless you just let them win.

That seems far fetched. Back in the early 00s I used to monitor networks which included, purchases, website tracking, read emails, photos etc...(list goes on) so as far as ISP not being able to see what your doing is hogwash.

If they track the content to your paid account then you have to prove otherwise. These company's have lawyers on retainer and can usually outspend you. Having an unsecured wireless access point is cause for contributory negligence on your part.

With that post you make it seem like I'm the big bad pirate d/l. So not true

It still doesn't change the fact that any ISP can do what they want when they want and as you stated ( there lawyers can outspend ) a person caught pirating. IMHO anyone using an unsecure wireless network is an idiot.

Wasn't referring to you.

And I never said my wireless router was unsecured. It isn't. I know at least one guy I game with who can hack a secured wireless router in a matter of minutes. It happens. That's how banks and government agencies lose and compromise our personal info.

Wasn't referring to you either.

Most networks are extremely difficult to hack nowadays, even for your gaming friend. The biggest threat is from packet sniffing. If your friend can hack into my wireless network then he should be working for the NSA. My router shuts down after 3 unsuccessful login attempts and must be manually configured to log onto wirelessly after that. Plus, your MAC address must be known as friendly to my router.
