Interesting info re .625/.5/.25


Doing comparisons on VHF mobile where you can pretty much guarantee a decent ground plane with the centre of the roof hole drill mounting methods I found no difference between the two for long distance doing side by side tests. However I did find two advantages the 1/4 wave had over the 5/8 wave:

1) Talking into a repeater a few miles away several hundred feet higher. 5/8 wave barely made the trip but the 1/4 wave had no problem.

2) Working out of band. Friend runs a commercial repeater and I do testing. Whilst at 165MHz the 1/4 wave still had a nice low SWR and received a nice strong signal the 5/8 wave was well into the red and the received signals far far weaker.

I run a 1/4^ mag mount for 2m on the center roof of my pickup cab. I get consistently better results from it than either of the 5/8 I bought.
Got tired of dropped signals all the time.
