BOOTY MONSTER

going by comments on different forums i get the impression that there are hams that like to cruse 10 meters looking for none licensed users and enforcing rules/protocol and generally being a wannabe FCC policeman . i was wondering if another band might have a lot less of that and be more friendly/forgiving to new folks . i realize you can find assholes and angels everywhere ....... but if there's a place with less A'holes it seems a newbie (with their ticket) could enjoy their money and effort to put a rig together a bit more .

or are the comments about wannabe ham cops exaggerated on forums ?

Never heard it happen yet. Not saying that it doesn't. But the chance is greater on 10m due to Export-type radios. Since 6m can only be accessed by an HF radio that is fitted for 6m; I would have to say that it could happen. I never heard that either.

Booty 10 meters is no less friendly than any other band, and there is a whole lot of room on ten for a guy to move over and do whatever.
The "ham cops" Are all listening for phone in the CW portion at the bottom of ten.....
If you have your Lic, you have just as much right to be there as they do!
I would rather spend my time Talking on ten than playing radio cop.

Also one of the benefits of ten meters is that most of the stuff built for 11meters/CB will work there also, antennas, mounts, ground planes, beams...and so on.
It is one of the cheapest bands to get on and work, there is plenty of equipment available used for a decent price to get on ten.
Propagation on ten is also a plus, when the band is open you do not need a lot to work it, just like CB, and much less traffic to deal with.
Don`t get me wrong, 6 meters is fun too, but 6 meter mono band rigs are much harder to come across than a 10 meter mono band rigs.
Most of the old stuff was AM.
It was a good deal when they changed the rules to allow entry level Hams to use Phone on Ten.
Tech will get you Voice on 28.300 to 28.500 and General gets you the whole Band, and it is big.
In over 15 years I have yet to hear unlicensed Operation on ten meters to date.......I think it is over inflated so a few rather overbearing Op`s can bitch about it.

6 meters is called the "magic band".

Some OPS like it, I tried it, bought one of those shack in a box all mode rigs, built me a home brew yagi and I talked, to Puerto Rico, it is what it is.

Antennas are not to big and can produce some serious gain for single boom yagi's.

A lot of grid hunters on 6, make the contacts log the data and move to next contact..

A group of us did start rag chewing on 6 meters for a while in the evenings, I was surprised at how well it worked.

It is a fun band, just not a lot of activity until an opening happens then it gets crowded quick.

unit_399,
You'll find 'pirates' anywhere, and from almost anywhere. A 'pirate' is just someone who'z where they shouldn't be for some reason. Those reasons can run from simple 'goofs' to intentional misuses. Anyone, everyone 'goofs' from time to time, not all that big'a deal, and it's more embarrassing than harmful in most cases. Intentional misuse is something else.

The band cops are everywhere, just spin the dial. Some of them have no other reason in life but to make shure you operate as they think you should.

Lots of good people out there also, you just have to find the group you fit in with.

Are these "pirates" inside the US or outside ? just wondering.

Prime example of what Doc is saying, Although not necessarily a "Pirate tactic".

I have been SWL on the rig on VFO "A", then I will switch to VFO "B", listen in on say 20 meters I will find a DX station I want to try to make a contact with , I key the Mic and next thing I know I am transmitting out of band on whatever freq I was listening to.

I forgot that I was last working split before I went to SWL, so all "Pirates" are not necessarily unlicensed, sometimes just mistakes are made.

Now if they keep transmitting on those freq then they become pirates per say.

Google free band frequencies and a lot more will come up besides just 27 mhz.

Had a friend that used to ID with a kazoo. Think he got a card for it once. But that's okay! We also used to compete for 'OO' cards. I dang near got a WAS with them. Can't expect to get Ha and Ak on 80 meters very often, still waiting on those.

(Proud member of the defunct '3853' group, the "Brown Spot on your radio dial!" It just don't get no better than that.)
