is it a grant or cobra

hello to all
I picked up this Cobra 148gtl-f on a trade. what has me boggled is that the tag on the back says uniden grant XL
and on the board, it has the Q for the transistors instead of the TR as the Cobras do. look at pics
has a variable power echo board and channel I haven't powered it yet trying to clean up the grime. made in the Philippines PB-208AB board

It's a frankenradio, alright.

The PB208 should be a big performance improvement over the Malaysia pc board that this radio came with. Really looks like the front panel and counter module got grafted onto the Uniden main pc board/chassis.

I would say that radio was born a Uniden Grant xl. Seems like a lot of work but maybe the front face got damaged beyond repair at some point and they had a parts cobra available. Who knows really

Somebody REALLY wanted a Cobra.......
But they couldn't find one so they stuck an old Cobra front on a Grant XL ?

yes it's clean inside no hacks everything is intact only 2 things were done channels on the switches and an echo board was installed where the mic gain spot was they removed it completely

the channel selector knob and the two switches on the faceplate are clearly from the grant XL.

most likely, someone wanted the solid performance of the older grant board but wanted a frequency counter for the extra channels, so they made a combo.

i would look as where the frequency counter module interfaces with the PC board, and my bet is that you'll find that it doesn't look factory, as there was never a grant made with a freq counter.

LOL!!! Basically... But as a few said earlier, run it if it works!! Hoping I narrowed down the problem with that President Washington.. Made a discovery and a diode clear across the opposite of the board may the culprit... I will report back in my thread if it is the case.

The board number PB208AD tells the tale... it's a Grant XL with a 148F faceplate on it.

It was born a Grant XL but now identifies as a 148F. Which is why its called a transceiver.
