that the Philippine and the Malaysian Cobra 148GTL made radios with the 5 pin side mic plug are better than the Chinese made 4 pin front mic plug?
Is there any difference in their construction...other than the mic plug placement?

My technical commentary: 8 year old Malaysian and Phillipino kids were much better at building radios than the Chinese kids.

A world of difference!!!! TRUST ME! I have a Chinese 148 GTL and it SUCKED on SSB until i had a tech do extensive reword to the audio section to improve the performance.. Now it ROCKS, but out of the box they SUCK EGGS!!
If you want a standard SSB CB get the Uniden 980. Now ive heard they work GREAT!!!

I say post the test data. I had one of each, both in great shape and side by side there was zero noticeable difference in performance. At least to my human senses anyway. I think folks are just hung up on old CB radios. I was too and favored the radios I grew up with but that doesn't make them technically better than newer. That's especially true for the Cobras.

Yeah.....I have a like new china 148gtl.....radio checks say it sounds ok....4 watts am and 12 watts ssb.....but my like new Philippine made uniden pc76xl will blow it out of the water on AM with its 1969 final. :)

I don't use scientific test date or scopes or analysers i just put a radio on the air and ask how it sounds...:D

Ask any good tech this question and he can give you the long list of cheaper parts or missing parts in the newer version of the radio. The older radio's are hands down better.

As an example, in the newer version they either went to one voltage regulator or a smaller cheaper one. This is why after a peak and tune the new one suck$ on SSB. It can't keep up so the audio warbles and sounds poor.

The only way a new one would be worth a hoot is if say you had DTB go through the whole radio and replace or upgrade all the cheap azzz parts to make it right.

Yeah...I would like to find a mint philly cobra 148....in the original box would be great....make a awesome birthday present. :)

The voltage regulators have already been pointed out. Here are a few other cut corners, no more SO-42P transmit IC mixer chip in the new radios. Gone is the metal cased FET transistor in the receiver mixer stage. The VCO is different. All have been replaced with cheapness. We wanted it for close to nothing, we're now getting exactly what we pay for.
