I am hoping this is the right place for this question...

Recently I was on a fishing trip where I was 1000 miles from where I live. At the fishing cabin there was a lady there who would use a radio (the 2 channel model here - An Overview of the GE MLS-II Mobile Radios) to contact her main office if she needed supplies.

I wanted to know if there is any way, maybe by using the internet somehow, that I could talk to her on that radio she has? At the place she is in, that is the only way she can communicate.

Any way for me to contact her from where I am?

Since it's VHF/UHF there'll be no -direct- means of contacting her. You might be able to do so through 'Echo Link' or maybe 'IRLP'. That means having an amateur license so would be very if'y (both of you licensed?). I have no idea what's available 'up there' so your answer is a 'sort of' maybe. Sorry about that.

They should get a satellite phone on that island.

As 'Doc' said, Echolink is probably the best way.
There is also the WIN system I think; but I haven't done that.
But possible.

If I understand Echolink correctly, looks like there needs to be a computer with an internet connection on both sides, is that correct? If so, I don't think that will work because the only thing she has linking her to the outside world where she is at is the radio. I understand that a satellite phone or maybe even Hughes Net might work there but those aren't options.

Thanks though.

where are you and where is this fishing village? the only thing i could think of is a yagi or directional antenna, just going to depend on the distance between you two.

you would have to get a radio to operate on the frequency she is on. best of luck.
