505NJ, for any mods to just about any radio out there, have a look at http://www.mods.dk.
Also there are heaps of sites specific to the 706, like http://www.dxzone.com/cgi-bin/dir/jump2.cgi?ID=11863

You could probably pick up an older ICOM 706 a bit cheaper (not MKII) which would do the job. Also radios like the Yaesu FT857D or FT100 are similar..
These like the ICOM are probably overkill for your situation, but as KingCobra said, they leave any "export" radio for dead.
