i want talkback in a 78 and my old external speaker has seen better days . i was thinking about getting a better external speaker and running dual lines back to the radios external speaker and pa jack and putting the resistor and a variable in a speaker . i THOUGHT i was being pretty smart and as i was patting myself on the back for my inginuity (and wondering why NO ONE had ever thought of this) i found this http://www.sparkyscbshack.com/catalog/item/2850971/2433932.htm   . this seems to do exactly what i want , just wondering if anyone knows if it sounds decient . i guess if worse came to worse and i got it and didnt like the speaker i could put the guts in another speaker or a kit box and plug what ever speaker i want into it . im not confident enough to go inside my radio and start soldering .

"Would you like a mirror to watch yourself talk also?"
thats what the rear view mirror is for :P

Booty,I use an external talkback box on my 78. I already had a couple of external speakers and hooked this thing up and it works fine.I did not get mine at walcott but did a google search to find a picture of one.
I would not know how to do what lords said.
http://www.walcottcb.com/images/pixel_trans I tried to post the picture but don't know how.

weather on or off topic here ? some of the best cb radio speakers I've ever used had nothing to do with cb in the first place , I use a small cube speaker that were sold at Radio shack years ago , I do understand size can be an issue here , but I have heard some cb related speakers that sounded OK , but I have a ear for the plastic walls of those damned things !! IM not a perfectionist when it comes to this , but I do and can appreciate a good ex.speaker on my radio. The one I use is made out of compressed sawdust and it has plenty of watt handling for my cb , it sounds great and it don't rattle or vibrate and the talkback through it it great. No ear piercing, filling rattling trible ! The best of those plastic beasts that I ever heard over the years had the name MIDLAND on it , I see them used on Ebay every now and then , those are good plastic cased speakers.

thanks for responding guys . im looking at a uniden CORSAIR . switch kit ive actually thought about using a high end computer 5.1 center channel speaker by klipsch http://www.klipsch.com/shop/lists/parts.aspx . ive wondered if the tweeters would make the static over bearing but it could be dampaned with tape or a cotton ball . i intendend to put my order in tuesday so i wont be bugging yall too much more lol .
thanks again guys .

is this the correct resistor ?
http://www.radioshack.com/product/i...Type/1+Watt+resistors&fbc=1&parentPage=family
if it is........
since i want to do it externally i just use 2 1/8 plug jacks....
install ONE resistor across the 2 hot/center conductors comming out the spkr and pa jack......
then connect the speaker to the spkr side normally (ignoring the resistor going to the pa side) ? is this correct ?
if so i could also just unplug the pa plug to turn off the talk back.....correct ???

sorry if i seem anal but i sure dont want to buy this and then kill it . i really appreciate the hand holding guys . it kind of reminds me of learning to do up grades on the computer . i was so afraid of killing it when i added that first stick of ram by myself and then later added that new graphics card (and drivers) . now i build and fix them for friends and family .

Uniden makes a real nice speaker and i also reccommend the Texas Ranger External speaker. I also told someone else that I know Extra class hardcore anti-Cb'er HAM guys that love the audio out of those speakers. AND THEY ARE CHROME AND SHINY TOO!!!

thanks 222 but theres no way id spend close to $50 on a speaker . ill get something better than what i got later .

NO IT GOES ACROSS THE GROUNDS, NOT THE HOT.

thanks Librium . i was thinking hots assuming that the grounds were already connected through grounding in the radio . rat shack didnt have the "Variable 50-100OHM pot" that lords mentioned....or i overlooked it on their site . if i ust the Variable 50-100OHM pot do i still need the resistor ? can someone post a link to the proper variable ?
thanks

Here's what I did, I bought a Cobra HG 500 with talk back and disassemble it,
and installed the talkback circuit board inside a speaker similar to switch kit's the only soldering that is done is to the better speaker.

Booty or anyone else, Concerning this universal talkback. I saw your review and I wish you could have used it on air so I coulkd hear how much volume it had when down to 0. Also has anyone tried to make one yet? any schematics out there? I bought one of these and hooked it up to my uniden 68 eleite and no-go. didnt work at all! I was furious! Any idea on how to build a universal talkback with pot and on-off switch? sounded like you were on the right track!
