I was doing some work with the firewall here the other day and since then I have not been able to access www.hamforum.com/.I just get a "page cannot be displayed" message similar to what the kids get when I lock them out of their gaming sites after they spend too much time on them.I can't see where I did something wrong but I am far from being an expert on configuring it.Is anybody else having a problem accessing the site.I hope it is not just me but then again I hope the site has not shut down without warning. :?

OK Tnx oilpatch. I was worried I had done something in the firewall that I missed.I don't think the stalking thing has anything to do with it,that has been an issue for a while. I know there was mention by the admin that the forum was close to disappearing a month or two ago.I hope that is not the case.It has been hit with a lot of spam lately as you know so hopefully it is just undergoing some rework. Thanks again.

Well I can see why it might die. I tried to register there and I did everything exactly right and it came back and called me a Robot and banned me. And to this date I cannot reach anyone there to see if they can fix it. There are no links to any mod or admin that I can email to discuss it unless you can log in. So I gave up.

But my point here is that they can not get any new members if their robot protection is haywire. Sometimes you have to deal with spam if you don't know how to set up protections least you kill your whole reason for existing.

Well cphillip maybe that is the reason it is down right now.Problems.There was a LOT of crap being posted and the admin took the step of requiring verification rather than instant access in hopes to curb the problem. Did you try once or repeatedly to join. That could cause being identified as a spam robot.I have no problem waiting for verification on any forum as it is usually no more than a day or two at the most.Hopefully it is just a config or server problem and will be back soon. If/when it does come back I can check with the admin and see about your joining if you want.

Well it did the robot thing the very first time I tried. I made very sure I copied the verification field correctly but thats when it came up and said "Die Robot" and said BANNED. And then later that night I tried to log in just to see if it was some kind of mistake and it said banned. And each time I would then try and click on a moderator or Admin's name to see if I could view an account and get an email I was given the banned message instead.

I did, a couple days later, try again to register. But it already had me as a robot and repeated the "Die Robot" message. This time I believe I tried from work in case it was an IP thing. But it wasn't... but I did continue to try and use my same user name. Because... its all I know.

main point I guess I should make is that many Forums have no recourse if something goes wrong because many of them do not make at least one contact available. This one is hard to find too. Theirs is impossible.

I just managed to find the admin's email address in my files and sent him a message asking what happened.Hopefully I will hear back and will post the results here as soon as I do.

Well normaly you just get a message back that you failed to do something or some such wrong if you did indeed. Not an automatic ban of the user name. When they are set up to call for a verification, the robot just cannot do it so it is enough just to deny confirmation if it does not do the copy right.

In this case I am pretty sure I did it right, because I have run into some that are hard to really tell what number or letter it really is, but this one it was fairly clear. It sometimes is case sensitive though. This one I tried to make sure I copied the case as well.

But after that, to set up the confirmation to automaticaly ban a user name for that is not only unusual but unnessicary as well. Its enough to just not confirm and activate the account. They can't get in anyway. And the robot will never get it right no matter how hard it tries because it can't read and comprehend the symbols.

So I suspect that it is just set up wrong. All the way through even. Perhaps even if a new user does everything right. And of course if you don't leave an email for someone to tell you its doing that and no new members come can come in and tell you that then... you will never know. You may notice your getting few new members. But never know the cause of that. I suspect this is the case.

I think my point is that you don't set up a verification screen to automaticaly ban for an error. No need to. Never.

And its possible that this one is even set up to ban no matter what.

I tried re registering today. And appear to have gotten it done. Awaiting activation now but I did not get the "Die Robot" and banned message today. I used same user name same password as before but I did use a different email address.

So if anyone got me cleared for take off then thanks! Although I still am not activated it looks promising.

Yea I can view again too. Before I would click on a thread and it would tell me I was banned.

I also then saw a thread where they were discussing putting a time event on the verification process. If you did not complete typing the verification in a set period it would automaticaly assume you were a robot. I do not know if they followed through and tried that. However if they did it would perhaps explain it.

Oddly enough that would be bass ackwards. A robot would attempt it, wrongly of course, in much faster time than I would have. And of course if you don't know your being timed you might get to that point and decided to take your time, and or get up and go get a beer or someting. And be screwed! its very likely that is what happened to me. But now it seems cleared and registration went smoothly this time. So far.

But seems they got something back in order. I still am not verified but got through the first process.
