It was bound to happen

Yep,I just read that on CNN. I am not surprised he met an early end I just thought it would be at the hands (mouth) of a croc that he foolishly got too close too. What is that old saying about playing with fire?

hes a big loss to the job he did, steve was very popular here giving the younger people some knowledge of wildlife that they would not learn from a stupid computer game,
without his risk taking many youngsters would not have been entertained by his antics but a human in water is like a fish out of water ( very vulnerable ), what made him entertaining is exactly what caused his demise sad but true :(

Just heard a few hours ago myself like others I thought about his wife and kids! I always thought he was a little off for being so close but it was entertaining and educational!

It was a total freak accident,(a good for nothing sting ray, can't count how many times they have hit my live bait over the years) , way to good at is craft for a croc to take his head off. It was just his time.

None of us were there at the time and do not know exactly what happened or how close he was at the time. A stingray will, out of involuntary reflex, extend a barb from it's tail when it feels threatened or stressed. For a conservationist and expert he sure must of misread the signs. He was a bit of a sensationalist as evidenced by his risk taking and that is EXACTLY what it was despite his claims that there was no danger.Like I said, you play with fire and you will eventually get burned. No differant than anything else people may do that involves unnecessary risks in the name of ego.

I wish the injury would have been survivable, you know, like losing a finger or something; anything that would have given him reason to pause and say, "Crikey", what in the hell am I really doing out here!"

I don't know if that would have worked or not.He had been bitten several times by poisonous snakes and had a few really close calls as a result so I'm not so sure it would have made a differance. I would have thought that having a family at home would have tamed things a bit. I know I used to climb my tower with a very poor safety belt, actually not meant for climbing but rather in a mine. When I got married I bought a REAL riggers belt and after the kids came along I bought a full body fall arrest harness.I just looked at life (and death) differently.

Would we apply this to firefighters and police officers. Even soldiers for that matter. What ever one chooses to do in life is their doing. Some like to do things that are more dangerous than others, just the way they are. And your right these people tend to die doing what they want as opposed to dying in ones sleep. And in both instances death is bound to happen. We all die , some sooner than others. Glad he did all that he did and enjoyed watching him very much. Guess its like racing only exciting if there are big wrecks. " What does this say about us."

My point is the part about taking unnecessary risks in the name of sensationalism.Police and firefighters etc. have a dangerous job they have sworn to do.A TV show is what you make it.I still think he went overboard with some of his antics in the name of sensationalism. It eventually caught up to him.

as a firefighter I say YES, hell, I'm a vol. therefore I do it for free, however I think there is a difference between people that put their lives on the line to save others, not to gain fame or sensationalize events....

Apparently there is video of the moment of contact, he is said to be seen pulling the barb from his chest, then he goes limp.

People getting stung by these creatures accidently is not uncommon, but having your heart peirced by one is a totally freak occourance, almost unheard of.

I think it sucks I am a reptile collector and just sold alot of animals due to health. This man was just unreplacable. He has proven and showed numerous lessons about a few different creatutes. My family loved watching him and in my opinion he is no different that a drag race drive stock car driver or fighter jet pilot they all have there reasons for doing it but are still very very dangerous. Sometimes its the thrill or adrenalin rush or just doing it period never the l;ess he was truly a great man and because of his crazyness as most call it we have learned more then we ever would have without him. My heart goes out to his family and crew members / staff

Well I too will miss his show and I am glad to read in the Aussi press that his wife will keep his animal park open.
I guess to say it bluntly His luck just ran out. What more need be said?
