in the calculator for the dimensions i would put 27 mhz for the freq right?

Why not put the exact frequency in there (say 27.205 MHz for Channel 20)?
The length looks correct for 11 meters. Remember frequency and wavelength are inversely proportional: the higher the frequency the shorter the wavelength (and therefore the shorter the antenna for a given type).
Thanks a lot for those links, but now im more interested in building something a little smaller like a 1/4 wave ground plane but im looking for more detailed plans- and would steel conduit work?
that seems like it would be real heavy. look around for old antennas in your area and get all you can and make and antenna out of the pieces. you might even get lucky and get a working antenna.
