Jeebus poor Phoenix.

Growing up in Las Vegas, I saw some pretty good sandstorms. Once, my mom sent me to the drugstore, which was only about 3 blocks away. I bought whatever it was she needed and stopped by the door to look at the latest issue of MAD  and when I looked up again, I couldn't see across the street! I literally walked all the way home, feeling my way. Had to keep my eyes closed and use a big red bandanna as a nose filter. Other than that, no problem. About five minutes after I got home: blue skies and all the other signs of a typical Vegas summer day. Dad and I "warsht" the cars the next day.

Yep. A while later I moved to "Warshington."

Phoenix has had a brutal summer so far, and it isn't even a week yet. 118° a couple days ago. That tops the hottest Vegas day I can remember: 114°.

Yea I read somewheres that this was typical start of the monsoon season. I think I read that correctly. However, was they talking rain or more sand?

"Monsoon" generally means rain, so I'm not sure about what the article you read is talking about. One thing I DO miss about Vegas and that whole area is the summer downpours. Usually in late July and through August, we used to get real gullywashers (quite literally), with hail and lots of lightning. Then came the flash floods. Highway underpasses flooded - and at least once, the crew from a "first responder" vehicle had to be rescued from rising water by a helicopter!

Caesar's Palace on the Strip was built smack in the middle of a large gully, which should have been warning enough not to build there. The downstairs casino flooded regularly during late Summer, but the management would bring out the old 100% mechanical slot machines, and tourists would wear hip waders, still fully willing to lose their money! Then Caesar's work force built the MOADT (Mother of all Diversion Tunnels), running UNDER the Strip itself and out toward Lake Mead. Could probably have built two or three resort hotels for what that cost.

A buddy of mine is Phoenix FD, they got 750 calls in a couple hour period.

Heh I freakin bet. I couldnt even imagine Like taking a nap or something and having to wake up to that. Or even in Beetles case with the MAD magazine. Hey Beetle did you do the folds in the back of the magazine while in the store?

Didn't have to -- somebody had already folded it and I could see the "message"...:D
