I was wondering if a home made vertical dipole can be made with 2 copper tubes of equal lengths could it be made so that the ground or lower element was made of the same tubing but ran through a tube bender to make a coil so that you would end with 1 large coil on the bottom as the counterpoise and the 108" or so element going straight up? As you see I'm in Chicago and it's about 15 degrees out and I need something to do and this was just a thought.

Yes

No

A dipole is a balanced antenna, meaning both sides are equal and pretty much symmetrical. Winding one end into a "coil" destroys the symmetry and the balance of the antenna.

But the question seems to be "can I do this?". Why not? Will it work? Define "work". Will I be happy with the result? Who knows - only YOU can answer that.

At least it'll give the OP a project.

O.K. let's end this one and say thanks to all for the info. I was trying to help a friend who has a HOA and antenna restrictions. TV antennas limited to 10 foot over peak of home and no towers only a straight mast way be used. We thought if we could "hide" the coil just above roof level all that would be seen is a "mast" which no one would question. Back to the drawing board.

BammBamm,
Given the situation as you described it, What I'd do in his place is a 1/4 wave ground plane like this one except the four GP wires would be drooping over two sides o the roof ridge line made of near invisible wire. All that would stick up would be a whip.
