I was on another forum watergating and I read a post about talkback in a uniden 520 radio. 2 people were having a serious difference of opinion about the benefits of talkback.
One of the combatants stating that talkback will improve the radios audio by giving it a "big room" type of audio.
I never had talkback in a radio but is this true or not? I'm pretty sure that is nonsense but I sure don't know everything.
Looks like a few of the posts in that thread got deleted by the moderators.

the only effect ive had from talkback is having it and the mic feedback because one was too high while using the other . i just use talkback to get an idea of my echo and if im squealing , then i turn it off and do the final fine tuning of the mic gain and echo with a trusted local on air .

echo can give a big room type effect , but talkback wont positively affect the tx .

Seems to me if the talkback is loud enough to be picked up by the mic it'll squeal.

The big room sound I guess can happen on a base set-up with a desk mic. I think "big room" sound is the least of their problems if they are running Uniden 520 radio's. LOL. Thats funny sounds like some retard redneck arguement.

while doing a talkback mod has nothing to do with the transmit side of the radio, i guess i can see where this guy's opinion came from.

if you are talking into your mic, and your voice is also coming through a speaker; the mic will pick up both sources, and i guess this might have an effect on how you sound on the other end.

hmmm...

thats why i thought echo was so popular . when i was a teen all the base setups in the area pretty much ran D104s and you could always here the echo from the room in them , as well at the TV and mechanical clocks (remember them?) on the same table . echo can help give that big radio , big base sound . far too often though echo is run too high , you dont wanna sound like youre at the grand canyon , but many folks do .

A radio should not need a gimmick like echo to be loud, that's only my opinion.
I have heard many a galaxy sound impressively loud with the reverb set properly but turn the echo off and the audio is clean but flat as a pancake.

I've had numerous "customers" confuse talkback/echo/big radio sound with eachother. Sometimes it's funny, other times frustrating trying to explain the difference. Some just can't believe that an echo board does not add power to their radio. They can "if" adjusted right make you audio sound betther. Oh well thats life with radios.

also remember that the audio you hear from the talkback is NOT what you sound like on the air, the audio you hear, is coming from the audio amplifier before it goes to the RF section of the radio.

depending on how your radio is tuned and swr will also effect how you sound on the air.

If you want to monitior what you sound like on the air, one way to do it is to get a second radio, turn the rf gain all the way down, short the antenna jack and plug in a set of headphones. Again, this is ONE way to do it, im sure their are many differnt ways.

just tring to help!
