Was wondering if some of you guys could help me understand this ? Let's say I have a car that the blue book says is worth 2,000 dollars ,would this be the number I would want to try and get for it ? Appreciate any help on this one. thanks

there are different meanings of the numbers for kelly blue book...

give me a few mins...i have one around here somewhere and i will walk you though it

SK, If I was to tell you it wasn't worth a dime, would you take a nickle for it?

KBB has listing for what a dealer might charge or a private seller, but these are guesstimates, lots of variables. Just because one person describes a car one way does not mean others will see it the same. It is a good estimate of what cars are worth and will give you something to go on.

I also like to look at EBAY motors and see what like cars are selling for. Local paper and Used Car Dealers are other places to get a good idea what like vechiles are going for.

What ya selling?

Also on a side note never give your bottom dollar price, always ask for offers. The offers may be more than rock bottom price, once you give this out you can't go back up.

or i will use a 1994 porsche 968 (as example)

trade in value exellent is $9175
good is $8505
fair is $7390

trade in value is typiclly what a dealer will give you as a trade allowance
(things such as milage will add or take away from this value
as are things like auto trasmition or ac etc)

Private Party Value

exellent is $11385
good is $10590
fair is $9620

Private Party Value is what a buyer can expect to pay when buying a used car from a private party. The Private Party Value assumes the vehicle is sold "As Is" and carries no warranty (other than the continuing factory warranty). The final sale price may vary depending on the vehicle's actual condition and local market conditions. This value may also be used to derive Fair Market Value for insurance and vehicle donation purposes.

Suggested retail value

Exellent $13665
______________________________________________

so what does all this mean

as a dealer it was my job to knock down your trade value
to as much less then blue book lists
but more importently to as a extemly rare doing to offer higher trade in allowance..

trades values are determined in part by having accessories beyond standequipment
more importently milage with is granted at 12,000 miles a year

obviously cleanlyness and good working order of all comes into play

___________

so retail value is the price the dealer will try despritly to not sell below..
they will go on about how milage so low all the extra features of the car
in looking at kelly these lower then 12,000 miles a year are awarded a x amount of higher value

as is also etras say AC or auto trans or bigger engin etc

all these are mixed together to gair the "retail value" of a said used car..

__________

private party value is same principal as retail value except that it is less because it is not typiclly sold by a dealer and therefore
not considered that the selling of the car is for intent of making a "business profit"

_________

now trade in is where you have to be quite carefull

i can not tell you how many times i beat up the value of a trade
while beefing up value of a retail car price

this is done to enable the dealer to gain far more profit when they sell the car you traded into them

i used to buy many jaguars at 30 to 50% of true trade value
and yet when i sold those trades i typiclly sold them for 25 to 50% beyond retail value

this is why used car salesman can make such good money

(then i really went to town if i did it as a lease and or financing and or insurance and or adding after market stuff from show room)

any other questions just ask

one other thing
if you are looking to buy or sell a car
if car is 10 or more years old

then kelly book may only be a general "guide"
as opposed to a solid liklyhood

It a 1991 5 speed Toyota pickup 4 cycl. , the truck is in next to excellent conditon (I'd say in between good and better) 153.000 miles on , good paint ,everything is original on it am/fm stereo good uplostrey very clean. Air con. could use some servicing. The truck has been very well taken care of and was baught new in 91 and has had the same owner ever since. And this would be sold privately to anyone whom might be interested in it, just was looking on what would be a fair price to go on ? You make good sence Hc Thanks alot for the help here gentleman , much appreciated.

according to kelly blue book

Condition Value

Excellent $2,225
Good $1,890
Fair $1,530

the rest is what you feel it is or is not worth
remember it is 15 years old
and 153,000 miles

it looks very clean
if runs as good as it looks

still your call

I was thinking 2500 but it's not mine and some guys won't let go for any less I guess ? Trucks seem to have a better value then cars for some reason ? And how bad does a guy need or want the money ? Do you think he could get more then 3 grand for it as is KC ? Thanks

i have seen those toyotas take extreme abuse and laugh it away

toyota pick ups hold their value
from the pic....looks it was well mantained
a truck like that well mantained would likly do 250,000 to 300,000 miles...

in a
urban area i doubt it would get $2500 easily
in more rural areas it would get that easily
(if it runs as good as it looks)

i remember once....when my brother wanted his first car..
he wound up getting a accord..

i did a....well it is a bit older then we wanted
brakes feel sluggish..

$3400 ?
i was thinking more $1800

you had it sitting the past 4 months

well think about it and let me know..
here is my number

3 days later he said he would not let it go for less then $2000
we went by that night

sometimes doing business asap is not good

Some listings I found ,

3000.00 sounds doable, how bad does e need the money and how long can he wait?

Cut and paste link could not make it work

again I say thanks ,IM no expert on these kinds of things for sure , but your numbers were just about what I was thinking ,my buddies a very interesting guy , the type that usually want what they want and will sit for a very long time before they budge or throw in the towel so to speak , but yet the same type that basically want something for little or nothing ..go figure huh ? .....they truly have a way about themselves. It's all good .......to each his or her own. Thanks again
