Hi I am resurecting a set of 599 twins for a friend .It has been unfortunatly been modified to 11 meters and would like it back to normal. this is the 599A
that does not have the cb band . instead 28, 28.5 and 29 are all shifted.
Before I get carried away all the crytals seem original that i can see without removing the bandswitch section in the xmitter the reciever does have some of the crystals missing that factory grey cover. Was there a mod for this?so I can undo it? Any body have any Ideas let me know .I still have to get the transmitter back up yet,It was ran on am and output section needs a lot of attention. Anyway thanks in advance ofr any suggestions. I have already searched mods DK and other sites. I did read a thread on the same problem and somebody had the unmod e-mailed Thanks Clay KC0TMP

Clay: The xtals are in the transmitter. They are mounted on a small board. You should not have to remove any band switch part to get it out. I think that board is held in by 2 maybe 4 screws remove those and the leads on the board should be long enough to remove and desolder those xtals.
The xtals for going back to 10m are sold by a guy on Ebay fairly reasonable if I remember...he also sells xtals for the 520's... The service manuals are on-line just look around if you have not found them.
The R599's had a open xtal board to add extra bands and for the optional 2 and 6m boards(extremely rare) and expensive to find in new condition. They only worked in the RX they did not make it transceiver on those bands.
Another tip use 6146B's in the finals...otherwise you will have to adjust the size of the bias resistor under the final cage. I don't remember but think it was a 2 ohm/5 watt...that mod for 6146W's is the same as the 520/530 series...not a big deal but the W's are a strong tube but about 20 watt or so less in output.
Good old rigs:D...I hope you have the factory interface cable from TX to RX...again hard to come by and not cheap to find. They are a special ends and not easy to make homebrew wise.
Enjoy

599 twins

It is very possible somone has totaly retuned it .I will dig into them further
just hoping there was some mod done before i burn more brain cells trying to work it out. The crystals on this unit is on the band switch pcbs. the other board is extra or external crytals for the ext band setting. I will go back and try to find the thread I read earlier thanks anyway.

I've owned a few of these but didn't work on them. If the VFO was retuned and you want tune it back, look for added padder caps. Also could be a bandpass filter somewhere which would have needed a retweeking. Moving back to factory would require retuning that too. Not sure in your case but I've seen that done to a HW101.

Look at the freq's printed on the xtals on the 10m section vs. the service manual info... dead give away if they have been swapped out...
should be about 1 mHZ difference...ie xtal installed 22.5mhz... service manual says xtal is 23.5 mhz...this was the common method to change them to 11m (don't remember the actual freq's) I had a set of factory service manuals but not sure if I still have them.
If I remember right they are on the underside of the chassis...
