I just recently acquired one of these radios and did the mod as described. So far it works good.

As for resistor removal, I used a regular soldering iron, and made sure it was hot and the tip was sharp and with the iron in one hand a pair of tweezers in the other, I heated the resistor just enough to melt the solder, then pulled up on the resistor with the tweezers.
