10 Alkaline batterys would be 15 volts, each batt supplys 1.5

Ni cads only measure out at about 1.2 to 1.3 volts, that is just the way they are, so if it has 2 dummy spacers that would account for using the spacers for alkaline battery's and then talking them out for Ni-Cads because the voltage is lower..

 I could see it running off of 15 volts "maybe" because AA`s pull down on transmit, but 18 is just too much voltage.

 12 volt is the Norm for these radios

Question.

Is there a plug in on the side of the radio to run it off of a DC power cord?

Take a look, often it will show the polarity of the plug and say 12 volt, or 13.6 or something.
