Hi all,

I don't know if this is the correct place but anyway:

soon i would like to visit the US and Canada. I have a wouxun portable dual band radio. I am wondering:

-is such radio legal in the us and canada?

-do i need a local license for this device?

- are these countries also using 144-146 and 430-440 Mhz for amateurs?

many many thx in advance!
trea

I assume you are in Belgium? The radio is perfectly legal for use on the amateur bands here in Canada as well as in the USA. In both countries here the 2m band is from 144-148 MHz and the 70 cm band is 430-450 MHz with the 440-450 MHz range used mainly for repeaters. As for any other license required, I believe Belgium is a member of CEPT and as such all you need is either a CEPT or IARP certificate that you can get before you leave. That along with your regular license allows you to operate in either Canada or the USA using your home callsign followed by "portable W1" or "portable VE1" or whatever applies. Check with your local amateur radio club or licensing authority for better clarification.

Don't worry, canada is not a "real" country, do as you please, I mean, they have cops on horses :bdh:  how tough can it be :pop::pop:

Did you ever hear about the 'Newfi' that wanted to go to the local taxidermy museum? He heard there was a Mounted Policeman there...
(Sorry CK, couldn't resist.)

I tinks it's spelled "Newfie", bye. I knows some of dems boys. Dey're all crazy in the eye.

For some added clarification, it's generally legal in the U.S. to use whatever radio you want to use on the Amateur bands (provided you have the license, of course) whether it is "certified" or not. It is your responsibility to stay within the band limits and follow the appropriate emissions standards for each mode. The "certification" is more about being able to market and offer for sale than anything else. You can home brew a radio from a toaster if you desire and run it on the air.

Hey treare i'm from ireland. I'd be intrested in working in canada. I wonder could you elaborate or pm me on migration advice?

Immigration to Canada is a very complex process. It definitely requires professional assistance.

It doesn't take much to stow away on a boat and walk into an immigration office and say "I'm here, now feed me, educate me, and keep me safe" usually in your native language due to a lack of English or French.

So much for the immigration process.
