Lincoln Display problem

RogerBird,

I have an older Lincoln I bought used in late 1995. The radio operates fantastic but has a display problem that is now consistent.

Since being a an auto accident years ago, the LED bars show almost a 4 s-unit display during receive constantly. When modulating, it never drops below that but swings up from there. Same with transmit. As an example, I can turn down the variable RF but even with 3-4 watts, it will go from the 4 bars up to 9 (display only, external meters show it is doing what it is supposed to).

Here is the kicker. When doing SWR checks using the built in meter, when I key the mic, the bars move very slowly to the calibrate position. It can take up to 20 seconds to finally get up to the upside down triangle used to set SWR. Actually using the built in SWR meter is impossible as is seeing how many watts out or a RX signal strength from the internal meter.

This problem used to be intermittent but is now constant. As stated, all aspects of the radio work fine, it's just this display issue.

Where do I begin? I'm thinking a cold/broken solder joint from the accident but have not opened it in years. I'm about to though. Only mods done (all previous to my ownership) were the channel expansion and external mic jack.

Hi,

I would start by checking/replacing the electrolytic caps on the display PCB, They have been know to cause weird problems.

Also I would chech C302 on the Micro PCb - Its near pin 1 of the Microprocessor.

Lastly I would check the Glue on the regulators on the Micro pcb.

if its Brown and Brittle (not Tan or yellow and soft) I would remove it and check the circuit board under and around where it was, and clean the PCB with alcohol.

The glue is know to cause shorts and corrode traces that can cause all kinds of strange problems.

Just a few things to try.
