Little QRP AMP

But why get a amp if you buy a qrp radio?HEHE...For a little more you can get a full power radio, and turn it down...thats what i do...73 de JW

Because a true QRP radio uses less power at full output then a 100 watt radio turned down to the same level does. It makes a big difference to those that take a radio back packing etc. My FT-857 draws about as much in RX mode as the FT-817 does in TX at full output yet the radios have a great deal of similarities. An FT-817 is great for mountain topping and a small amp would be great for those rare times that it would be needed.

I recently bought a ic703+ QRP radio and am in the process of building an EB63 amp for it. My intent is to use it backpacking then for things like field day use the EB 63 to boost thepower up to about equal to my ic707.

Elecraft will be releasing a new amplifier for their new QRP rig the KX3.

It is an external 100 watt amp 1.8-54mhz, KXPA100 amp

The idea behind it is you can use the KX3 as a 100 watt mobile that you can use in your car or use as a base and if you decide to backpack or similar you simply unplug the KX3 from the amp then install the AA batteries in the KX3 and your QRP.

The radio itself will be released this month or next then they will complete the amp and release it. According to Elecraft the amp will work with other radios

Elecraft KX3 Transceiver - Preliminary Information

KXPA100 High-Performance 160-6 meter, External 100-W Ampflier
(see below); usable with most 5 to 10 W transceivers

Awesome amp there with a true 10:1 linearity ratio and 150mA current drain it should barely sip dc current off line.

My 2/2879 does the same 10:1 linear ratio with the bob85 ab/c biasing draws 250mA current at idle but that is when the bias is engaged which is only at TX.

But I do not have any band switching.

Oooops, I guess those numbers are for the qrp rig and not the external amp. sorry

AMP

Looks like a well built amp, and if the price is right a good amp for qrp or let alone the 100 watt xcvr, especially for digital a few watts in and one hundred out would be dandy..
