Has anyone tried, or do they know, what could be expected (ears/transmit/swr) by putting a longer top (whip) section on the A99"

Also, if you've done it, how long were you able to go before it was not tunable or useless?

Thanks,
HBB

Most likely it would move the resonant point of the antenna closer to 12 to 15 meters instead of 10 to 11 meters.

A couple or few inches one way ot the other probably won't be a huge problem, the 'rings' (impedance matching circuit) should be able to handle that. If you're trying to make it into something approaching a 5/8 wave antenna, don't waste your time, the 'rings' can't do that at all.
If you don't mind lowering the thing, give it a shot, see what happens. If that's more trouble than you wanna go to, you ain't lost nothing.

If I'm not mistaken they have a 98'' fiberglass covered whip so you could always try stabbing a 102 in there and give it a shot.

don't know how well they performed, but, a few years ago:blush::blush:, i do know many peope used a 102 in (96in??) FRANCIS fiberglass whip on them (i think the FRANCIS was really a 3/4 wl wire inside the 'glass)

add: now that i think about it, i think this was done to the bleed,....errr,.... big sticks , not the a99's

I agree. don't waste your time..read the book.. LOL :D

i personaly tested the '' a99 fire up tip '' and it does improve the tx..now on recive it probly wont do as good as the regular tip being less wire hiegth to capture the signal..i dont know,,i didnt test recive .... the amazing thing was there was a definite improvement on tx even though the fire up tip is shorter than the original tip ....

I did put a steel whip on it. A turn or two on the rings and it was very good swr. Could not tell any difference on local, maybe a little better ears, but dx was too sporadic to get any real idea.

I now am looking to get a 5/8 wave without breaking the bank. Got a little bank.
