The Yaesu FT -757GX that I just got has a loose tuning knob. What is the best fix for the loose knob?

or if its really bad
The fix was to remove the VFO knob - I did not see any screws holding it so ... I just pulled it out... It worked, just pulled a little and out it came. This then exposes the VFO tension assembly, a mechanical tension "band" onto a Teflon pulley on the VFO shaft that is adjusted by the VFO tension screw just under the VFO. Loosen the VFO tension adjustment and remove the Teflon pulley. You can then see a lock washer holding the shaft into the brass sleeve. This is where the problem is ... no doubt the factory lubricant became dry over the years in storage. My ”fix” was to use a few drops of CRC lubricant. DO NOT spray all over the rig - just carefully apply a drop or two via a screwdriver or similar where the shaft enters the sleeve. Then take some pliers and gently move the shaft back and forward. The shaft on my radio became clear in a few seconds and within a minute of moving back and forward was spinning like new. The reassembly is the reverse procedure

What about just the knob? That's what's loose - it isn't catching just right and won't let me put my finger in the hole to tune quickly. I can spin it with the outside of the knob, but trying to crank it with the fingerhole makes it slip.

Right - the fingerhole is not loose, and the tuner "pole" is not loose, either. The knob that goes on the tuner "pole" is what's loose. I'm going to try tightening the screw underneath the set to see if that tightens the knob itself.

IIRC the rubber grip band on the tuning knob will come off. Be carefull with it as it may be weak from age but see if it will lift up and slide off the knob. You should then see a set screw that needs to be tightened. Can't remember if it is a slot type screw or an Allen key hex head.

That rubber banding makes sense. I'll see if I can gently pull it off to hopefully access the ability to tighten it. I'll be careful not to crack it any more than it is already.
