I was surprised as I heard an old radio contact friend on the air coming from Hawaii. I turned my radio down to 5% output which should be about 5 watts and made a return call attempt to 369 from Ole Grandpa, CDX390 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
I got a response on my first call. I could not hold the contact due to other stronger stations, but I increased my output and got right back into the mix and made a full contact.
Try your low side output sometimes, you may be surprised how little RF it really takes to make DX communications---if conditions will permit.
I was TX'in off of my AstroPlane at about 45' to the tip.
