Magnum Delta Force problem

I picked up this 10m radio at a pawn shop. From what I can tell, it hasn't been modified, but there were screws missing from the covers.

No mic came with it, so I bought an adapter off flebay and hooked up a Cobra mic. Seems ok when setting SWR's to an inverted V antenna.

Problem is the receive is terrible. I can program my RS Scanner for 29.6200 and hear an FM Repeater on the scanner antenna and the inverted V. But all is quiet on the Magnum. I did hear this Repeater on the scanner antenna when I first brought the radio home, but all is quiet now, no matter which antenna I use.

Any ideas? Sell it? No radio shops around my area.

Thanks for any help.

If you got it for a good price....

It might be worth the gamble to send it off to a "decent" tech for a look see and alignment.

I would only do it if I got it cheap and it was in good to very good condition cosmetically. If not, parts rig it would be.

I gave $40 for it. It looks very nice, but no original mic.

I got it to receive (operator error), but now it screams at me when I key the mic, and the frequency selector knob isn't working perfect.

Not sure if I will send this thing in for repair or not. I may just cut my losses and be done with it.

Thanks for all the help.

The Delta has all mode variable talkback, just turn it down or off. It is the outer ring of the clarifier control.

The talk back is probably the problem (because I was messing with the clarifier) but I can't seem to turn it off. If I open up the radio can I turn it off from the inside? Or disconnect it?

Thanks

I think Freddy Krueger owned this radio before me. I think this because I took the cover off and found the biggest mess of wires with globs of solder on them. LED's hanging loose, wires of every color you can imagine.....going nowhere, but still enough black tape to effectively tie Superman to a chair and keep him there.

I don't know how they charge if I send this radio in to be fixed. If it's by the hour, it's going in the junk box.

Thanks to all who tried to help.

There is a talkback volume control on the front of the radio. That would be the 'AMT knob' ('All Mode Talkback'). Look online for an owner's manual if you don't have one. Find it at the 'CB Tricks' site.

Here:

Just turn down the 'AMT' knob all of the way to the left.
Done.

If that doesn't work right; then send it to a shop and have them straighten out what someone else screwed up. After all; you only paid $30 for the radio. I would. Don't start turning the pots inside; there is no talkback adjustment in that radio IIRC. BAD move. You will just end up screwing it up even more. Nice radio when working right - no doubt about it.

That's what I was thinking Robb, maybe that thing is so messed up it does not work. A Delta Force is an excellent radio when working properly.

I closed the radio back up and was going to throw it in the scrap bucket, but for some reason I hooked it back up today and it keyed up just fine. I have the AMT all the way off.

I am hearing a little on 28.400 USB but have not made a contact yet.

I think I might send this radio in to have it worked on. Do they charge by the hour? By the job?

Once again, many thanks for the help.

well to me it sounds like at one time it did have 11 meters in it, then swapped back
to just 10 meters when you got it. when this is done they realign/tune the recieve
for 11 meters. so if they had it in 11 meters and changed it back to 10 meters
without re-tuning the recieve for 10 meters this could be the problem. or maybe the recieve wasnt ever tuned. my delta has great recieve its second to ONLY my ar3300/3500
