After October 31, 2009, GLA Systems -- the manufacturer of the Texas Bug Catcher antennas -- will cease taking orders for new antennas; according to their Web site, all orders received before that date will be filled. "Effective November 1, only orders for items that are in stock at the time will be accepted. Effective December 31, 2009, the toll free line, 1-800-588-2841, will be discontinued." No reason was given for the closure, but on GLA's Web site, owner Henry Allen, K5BUG, said "It has been a fun 30 years, but it is time to hang it up. I would like to thank everyone who has made this experience possible."

All I can say is that if you want the best HF mobile antenna made, you'd better get it now. Not the prettiest, or the easiest to tune, just the best.

I used one mobile on 75 and 20 back in '87-88, and later used it on the balcony of my apartment with one radial each for 10, 15, and 20. Worked very well. I had no problems getting it to tune on the low bands mobile (though I was mobile with an HW-101, talk about glutton for punishment!), and had only to adjust the clips maybe a half inch for portable use and 75 ohm coax feed. Worked the world with 50W RTTY using that Bugcatcher leaned over at about a 20 degree angle sitting in a simple stand made from pieces of 2x4.

If you don't need (or want to pay for) automatic bandswitching, Texas Bugcathers are hard to beat for mobile HF.
