Hey guys, need your inputs and time again. I'm looking at the Yaesu MD100 desk mic and there's a piece of data I can't find in the spec sheets. Does this mic have a pre amp or just the high and low cut filters? Thanks in advance.

Shouldn't need a preamp, but what rig are you running it on? I've talked to a couple of guys running them on FTDX1200's and 3000's and they sound pretty darned good. Much prettier than the MD-200, too. Woof!

S35: Actually the 857 should have good audio without a amplified mic added....but it's all about preference.
I had a 100d mic and sold it quickly, just to short a stand and picked up to much back round noise for my taste.
I have several mic's I use on my Yaesu rigs:
Presently running on my FTdx3000 I have an Audio Technica T1000HE (HE/High Energy) Also have a Heil PR-781 with is on my FT-950 for now. Had it on my 3000 for quite some time, however it is a stout mic and was pulling down my boom all the time.
When I get a stronger "goose neck"....I'll go back to that.
I also have a Heil "Gold Elite" studio mic which sounds very good also on any of my Yaesu rigs.
Shure makes a mic called the SM-58 excellent for normal speech tones....it is widely used for most meetings and is a excellent choice for a "Podium" mic.
I prefer a "studio" type for the "wider range" as my voice has a lower range and the studio mic's normally will accent these tones better.
The key for me is when someone meets me in-person...They say " You sound in person just like you do on the radio"....then to me that is a good mic and the radio is set correctly.
BUT what works for some, may not work for you....so sometimes your first choice may not be your last.... ( I have maybe 10 or more mic's I keep around) just depends on the rig and the usage...What sounds good on SSB, can be not as good on FM or AM....
Well I am sure this has really been helpful...nada!

@bjradionut: Thanks for the reply. I'm still building my station and I don't know a lot about this. If I don't need amplification to get good audio, then so much the better. That just means less expense for me. Do you think that there's a big difference between the stock mic and the MD100? Enough of a difference to merit the expense?

What about the MFJ-299 desk console? Are they any good?

Here's some info on the settings for the 857D you may find useful...
The MFJ mic may be OK for you but pay attention to the details as some of the button controls ONLY work with Kenwood rigs...
The MD100 A8X mic may be fine for you, just did not suit me. It does have some nice control features for operating the rig.
Again microphones are a personal preference "thingy"....
See the details on the link listed above and start there before you jump for something adding $$$ to your cost.

Thanks for the links, very interesting and informative.

I actually have my LSB and USB carrier balance at -100. I have my mic gain and processor level cranked up to 80, because that's where I get my best audio reports.

Maybe I was just drawn into the status symbol race in our local ragchew frequency where the big guns with highly filtered and processed audio tell us newbs what we need. They tell me my audio is a bit thin and needs some amplification but they seem to understand what I'm saying just fine. :D

As your link mentions, these rigs were produced to a price point and the mic seems to one of the places the manufacturer cut costs. I will probably try getting a better mic in the future but your replies have given me a different perspective for now. Thank you.
