Thanks for the links, very interesting and informative.

I actually have my LSB and USB carrier balance at -100. I have my mic gain and processor level cranked up to 80, because that's where I get my best audio reports.

Maybe I was just drawn into the status symbol race in our local ragchew frequency where the big guns with highly filtered and processed audio tell us newbs what we need. They tell me my audio is a bit thin and needs some amplification but they seem to understand what I'm saying just fine.

As your link mentions, these rigs were produced to a price point and the mic seems to one of the places the manufacturer cut costs. I will probably try getting a better mic in the future but your replies have given me a different perspective for now. Thank you.
