I saw this on another forum. Thought it was pretty good.
We tend to only consider the words in the first verse of "America the Beautiful." On Memorial Day, I think it's appropriate to recall Katherine Bate's third verse to that wonderful song:
"O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!"
My passionate thanks to all our heros who are now serving or have served; deepest respect and honor to those who've made the ultimate sacrifice; heartfelt sorrow for the families who have lost their beloved patriots.
And for those serving in foreign lands, a hope that you'll soon return to this magnificent free land that you are defending.
I'm so fortunate to be an American!
