MESSENGER 450 is available again

i havnt been around the hobby as long as you switch so i certianly dont know the history of amps anywhere near as well as you do . ive only seen/herd of two versions of the 225 , that certianly doesnt mean there wasnt others .

i concede to the hippie from the other coast !!
 
The times I don't get it ? are the times I wasn't suppose to. :) Weren't Hippie's something out of the 1960's ? Beatnik's and Dobie Gilliss and bongo players ? L.S.D. and wakey tabakey smokers ? The Strawberry Alarm Clock ? The Hell's Angels ? Peace and Love ?

Hey ? Didn't those guys use tube amplifiers ?
 
Coax Kid, Charlie 3, Exports are us, now that is old school stuff right there.
I used to get Magnum 6000`s from Charlie for $256 shipped for a single unit.
Even cheaper if you bought 6 at a time.

Ahhh the good old days.

Oh wow I remeber these guys..... I bought from exports r us and coax kid.... miss those days now everything is hidiously expensive..... btw I need a 1 pill driver cheap lol to drive my 6x2678. dont care about looks only function ( would go under my seat)

Why would you need a band switch on a solid-state amplifier? The bandpass filter should roll off the freq. as you near the limits of the transistor. The band switch on a tube amp is on the input side not the output side. It does not matter if you have a band switch or not if a tube or transistor is not designed for the freq. range you are trying to amplify your band switch is not going to help anything at all. IN fact you could have a tube amp that had no real input tuning at all and as long as the tube could handle the freq. you are trying to amplify you could use an antenna tuner to match the input to to what the amp's tubes want to see. The biggest thing the input tuning does is safeguard your precious not so tuff overly expensive output finals in your all digital radio. Case in point you can drop the put from a tube amp into a light bulb or a cyclone fence or an electric fence. If you used a tube radio that had the right impedance you would not need any matching at all if we are talking about a mono band for instance.

In fact one of the selling points for transistor amps is the no tune nature of them their natural broad band nature. The down side of transistors is that they must have a very specific operating envelop in terms of the load matching. High SWR's that a tube amp might not mind or an impedance miss-match in feed line to antenna would destroy a transistor. One of the reasons the 2SC2879 is used so much in mobile amps is that they are very durable with regard to temporary high swr.

Yes I am over simplifying things but not so grossly as to be outside of the box.So if the radio had clean output from 3-30 it would not be much of a problem for the right transistor. The 2SC2879 unless things have changed used to be rated to 20Mhz not 30 so I have no idea how clean it is at that freq.! I do know that the entire range of freq. that the 2950DX can produce seems to be just fine on 500HD and 667's and such with no splatter if everything is aligned properly. What the cheaper amps lack is power fold back based on swr to protect the transistors and they could benifit from more filtering. It would be nice if they had diagnostics on power up as well.
 
It seems in this thread, that the FCC harmonic output limits and IMD (inter modulation distortion) limits are being ignored for marketing these amplifiers.
They need to be tested for approval by the FCC or are illegal to market in the US, made here or imported.
Running untuned inputs and outputs is old time and results in not being able to meet the specs in any type amplifier design unless the input is designed for single band use.
Harmonic filtering is still needed on any amplifier output side.
The part 97 specs was upgrades years ago.
 
AND BTW, a Fla. CBer got cought with illegal radio, first amp driving a second amplifier and they were still warm to the touch when the field engineers came if for inspection.
Can you say $10,000 notice of libality?
Once any non CB authorized equipment is used in any form, the legal ability to go on the air is automatically canelled by law.

most likely a class C splatter box driving bigger class C splatter box with a over-modulated radio in front of it ...... stupid is as stupid does .

does anyone have any idea if or where the AB biased and filtered messenger , galaxy , palomar or cobra amps are being sold other than at 292"s ? i'd trust jack to do me right , but i wouldn't feel comfortable recommending him to someone else cause he can get fickle .... plus his prices for them are/were definitely higher than the other folks that carried them ......
 
That style of amp is hard to pin down because of the nature of the grey market they are sold in. A lot of them that do have AB bias will work fairly well on ten or twelve meters if you run a clean radio into them and do not overdrive them.
Eagle has a nice thread on here about one of the RM amps that starts off as a class c amp and how to convert it to AB bias. And another good thread about building a nice little filter.
Bob also has a thread here somewhere on a nice board he made that works well on a pair of 2sc2879s to add bias.
The Texas star amps somehow get by with being sold as a CW transmiter and are sold openly now.
Many make decent mono or dual band amps with a little work, a clean signal in and reasonable drive levels.
