Ok all...I now turn to the experts. Is the stock mic the best for the HR2600? Or do you all have other recommendations? New or used what direction would you go. The HR2600 will be used mostly as a mobile for now and later down the road I will expand my use of this fine radio, Thanks in advance.

Astatic M575 does fine on my Lincoln....

I have to say that I have owned numerous HR2600's and the best combination I found was with a Sadelta Echo Master. This mic has great sensitivity but, don't use the echo or maybe just slight echo.

560pF between leg 2 and 3 of mic amp IC104, paralel to R85 470k.
This cap cuts all the high tones in your audio.
If after removing you will have too much highs, put 68pF. It will cut them a little bit, but not too much.

Heil HC4 cartridge in the stock mike body. There is a reason Bob Heil is in the rock and roll hall of fame.

The HR xxxx series were all known for low factory audio with any mic and especially the stock mic. Audio was limited TOO much. They can be easily be made to be loud. Clip the ALC transistor then add favorite power mic. I used a Turner +3 as a base. Radio sounded great. Even though they're non-amplified, the Astatic 636L's are loud and clean and inexpensive for mobile application. The 575M's are great mics but not made anymore, hard to find and pricey when you do find one for sale. The 2018 Echo jobby ought to work well too.

Good luck

i never had to clip anything in any of the hr radios i had
audio was a tad low but after a GOOD tune up and power mic they sounded great
i do agree with ya on one thing the 575s are going for way too much money.
a d104m6b will work as good [without tone control] or 2018

You can Play with the Value of Cap untill you get the tone that you like, I think I wound up with 120 pf in mine...but I like to tinker.
Right now I an running a Cherokee CMP-400-PRB Mic into a Astatic MobileMax and I get plenty of good Audio reports on both AM and SSB ( I just have to remember to roll off the slapback on SSB  or get called several colorful names) This radio is being used as a base set-up right now....There are a few mics that will sound good on this radio, the RK 56 works well in a noisy mobile environment, and I have even used a Silver Eagle D-104 on the base.
Just monitor your audio and adjust the gain so it sounds good without picking up background noise.
My 2600 has a Chipswitch in it, and I also did Rogerbird`s AMC Mod as outlined below, that allows a little more headroom, but still lets the AMC to do its job ( click here>) micgain2
I Do NOT recommend cutting the AMC out when the above mod will allow plenty of audio with a power mic.
I like to try different mics and monitor my audio on another receiver to adjust the levels and then get on the air....they are great little radios.

not great.ive seen the mic gain mod before. i just perfered to push in
the mic gain button [off] then use the variable on the mic ,by doing
this it sounded very good.and didnt overmodulate..now if i used stock mic or n/c
mic then id push out the mic gain[on]
