hello all, first post. total noob but working on the canadian basic.here is my question. i have a midland 70-335 that i used for years as a radio telephone. it has 4 channels for the repeaters that were then in use(not anymore). the radio worked great and probably still does. what can i do with this radio? it has room for 7 sets of cristals. will this radio work similar to the old sbx11? what cristals should be considered? it was always used as mobile but could it be used with some kind of dipole antenna. any sugestions welcome. thanks

If you can find crystals (Midland replacement crystals and channel elements from International Crystal) you could use it for a few frequencies that are common in your area. Personally, I think I would just spend the money on a more recent used radio that can do the entire 2 meter band than spend any money on a radio that an only be used on a couple of frequencies.

I agree. With the price of crystals, and you need two for each TX/RX channel, it adds up pretty quick. A good new radio could be had practically for the price of the crystals and you would have all band coverage and memories that can be scanned to boot.

hey guys, thanks for the replies. the problem is that i do not have enough knowledge to ask the right question. so lets try this. if i put the same crystals in the midland as the sbx11 used will it do the same job with the same antenna? it is a more powerful radio than the sbx11. is the midland a hf radio? i told you i was a total noob!

hi guys , thanks again for the answers. i decieded to go with your advice. but, dang. it just seems wrong to junk a good working radio.

It's a VHF radio, I wouldn't toss it. If it works you could use it for an APRS radio, you'd only need crystals for 144.390Mhz

Here's a web site for a guy who uses the Midland 70-335 for APRS

Just for comparison, a friend of mine went to a hamfest this weekend and bought a KDK 2M synsithized (sic?) with a tone board for 50 bucks. Works fine (so far:wink:). He, too, is preparing to take the exam. There's plenty of better deals around and a lot of repeaters are tone encoded nowadays. I'd keep the old radio, but just put your $$ in a more modern rig. My 2 cents.
