Anyone have any experience with the Little Tarheel II mobile on 80 ? Looking to change out my ATAS-120 for the Tarheel to pick up 80m ..

Thanks

On 80m mobile operation the antenna is EVERYTHING and is not for the faint of heart. The Little Tarheel II is still a very short antenna for use on 80m unless you use a much longer whip. I have done a little bit of 80m mobile but just used an 80m Hamstick. Nevertheless I was able to work into the Midwest area, down into Florida and even a couple contacts into England all with just 100 watts. I would suggest that if you do go with the Little Tarheel II that you use as long a whip as you can on it.

I used that antenna for a while, Happy_Hamer has, as well. It's REALLY short and inefficient for 80 meters, but if it will get you on the band, it's better than no antenna! If you need a small antenna like that, also take a look at the Hi-Q 2.5/80: Hi-Q-Antennas for HF Ham Radio Mobile Operation KEYWORDS: W6HIQ, HA5CMG, VE7BOC, HF mobile antennas, mobile antenna, screwdriver antenna, coils. The Hi-Q antennas are very high quality and the height of the antenna does not change.

I didn't have the Little Tarheel II very long because I decided to go with a full sized screwdriver type antenna.

I am going to put the 56" whip on it that is suppose to increase its ability, I have the ATAS 120 right now and really dont want anything much larger than that on my Explorer.
Maybe if I had a full size truck I would go with the bigger antennas. My ATAS has done really well and I have quite a few DX contacts in Europe with it.
