Hello again to the forum and Happy New Year. I have designed a monster quad using EZNEC 4.0: 6ELEMENT ON 48FT BOOM F/B31.03 ,17.92DBI@60FT, VSWR1.02@ 50.30OHMS(27.025). My concern is with the front/side lobes although they are pointing forward, the gain is 17.46. Would this make a differance in the transmitting or recieving of the antenna?
Give some feedback on the antenna specs also,please? Oh its an optimize 6element quad.

Most antennas are 'reciprocal', they do about the same on both transmit and receive. So, your antenna would probably 'hear' as well as it 'talked'. Something like 17 dBi of gain isn't all that bad at HF. 'Course, the 48 foot boom sort of makes it very impractical.

I've 'played' with antenna modeling programs for a few years, I think they are fun. I use a sort of 'limited' one preferably, "Nec4Win95", but also have "EZNEC". Thought about 'upgrading' to one of the newer versions, but haven't talked myself into that yet. Having gortten used to the 'format' of 'Nec4Win95' I'm not as happy with others. (That 'Win95' ought to tell you about how old that program is :).) Oh well...

Thanks for your imput W5LZ. I am doing a lot of reading on cubicle quad antennas, and I am experimenting with optimize quads there is much more to know about cubicle quads and I will continue to read and experiment with these antennas(as u can tell by now I am in love with the quad antenna).Like I said I am concern about the sidelobe(17.46db), but I love the long boom because of the narrow beamwith @43 degrees.As i continue to explore the world of the cubicle quad I am sure things will get better Thanks again for your comments.

that much gain from 6 el. quad on 11 meters.
i would be interested to know where that
figure came from. otherwise, good job!

The Quads are nice antennas, although at 11 meters it gets hard to handle one bigger than 2 elements. Take it up to 2 meters on VHF, and you can throw up a wiz bang mega quad and it not be too long or heavy.

Thank you Freecell , I have the full version of eznec 4.0 and through much addition subtraction i came up with this antenna. For example the reflector and directors are 12gauge and the driven is 6 gauge copper. Spacings from reflector to 4th director as follows 6ft,10ft,11ft,12ft,9ft. Oh i use 11 segments on the programme and i cant wait to build this antenna.
 
SM, I have used several optimized results for a yagi antenna, but I have never worked with a quad. I found that at the extremes of optimized modeling the results may look good on screen or paper, but when applied in a real world setting I often ended up with beam real performance that was almost omni directional instead of directional. Of course I could only judge these results via my human senses and the results that I saw on my receive meter. I also did some on-air comparisons with some friends as well, but those results were also not very impressive.

I have no idea what real results you are seeing when you apply the optimized results to the construction of your beam, but:

1. I would suggest that your using only 11 segments is not serving your design and optimization needs very well.

2. I also discovered that pressing the limits of the software by re-optimizing an already optimized model, if that is what you're trying to doing, was probably exceeding the technical limits for accuracy in the software. The side lobe results you describe give me that impression at least.

Hello Marconi, I used up to 21 segments and the dbi gain only changed by .01.The 11 segments wre the loweet that i used ,but as far as accuracy (on paper) I think its on the money.The dbi @ freespace is 12.59 and like I said before @60 ft its 17.92dbi.When I am finished building it i will inform u of its performance. The antenna was built from scratch(modeled) it was not an optimize before, I took my time and designed it.

If I would have moved it, I would have edited the thread to remove the posts that no longer apply, like this one, your's, his, etc.
