Hello all,
well i have seen how some antennas are 1/4 wave,1/2 wave etc..
since the closer one gets to a full wave t seems the antenna radiates further out from its sides with a lower angle & this tends to agree better with vertical distance(skip) contacts..
so if 5/8 wave is better then a 1/2 wave which is better then 1/4 wave which is better then a unity wave..
so is a 7/8 wave better..
what of a full wave..
OR
an antenna that can switch from say 1/4 wave to 1/2 wave or even 3/4 wave...Such as the steppir antennas..
now antennas such as the steppir verticals can not only be properly tuned to get best SWR for a given frequency..
but also given what frequency you are on (as in high HF to low VHF frequenncys) you can change from simple 1/4 wave on up to a 3/4 wave (thereby changing how the antenna radiates the power supplied it(again while still mantaining great SWR's over many frequencys)..
Price aside...
i good idea these abilities....or not..Pros & Cons ??
Thanks
as some of you may know i have been on radio for many many years..
i had for awhile gotten fed up with 11 meter & had been unimpressed by those ametuer radio people i had known at the time..
i had mistaken a few bad apples to represent the intire ametuer radio hobby field..
Obvioiusly i was quite wrong & desided as i was helping a friend of mine pass the teck class test he had failled twise before then i also took & passed the test..
anyway i had done most my radio contacts via mobil use..
back in the 70's & though the mid 80's i ruled the airways & made 99% of even base stations look poor in comparison..
Now in coming back to the hobby & then ofcourse taking it to the next level i now focus everything towards base use (this was something i never thought i would do....lol)..
So now i have a ever growing antenna farm growing on my roof & a hole lot of other stuff under the roof...lol..
since i am doing some catching up...
as well as in past most everything i did ..i did so via experimentation & didnt wait to learn the reasons why this or that did or didnt work...
rather i realised what had worked & simply went with it..
Now i greatly out do what i had done in the past..
now i clearly still do far better then most base as well as mobil set ups...
however as most people i am always striving to do better..lol..
(dont we all try this..lol)..
so i have seen there are a few people on places such as here who know a bit more then i do..
as a result i can spend less & typiclly do better results then simple experimentation(though experimenting does have its advantages as well..lol)..
But why not ask my questions here where i can get the answers answered in a timly fashion as well in a knowledgible fashion..
Yet in so doing many others here also will read & catch on to these advantages..
some of the questions i ask are on the easier side..
some are a bit more involved..
hopefully i dont ask any stupid questions(but to me there is only a stupid question if the answer is known & understood before asking it...lol)
So as you see my questions often spark more then a few answers as well as many viewers..
So i suppose in ways not only am i helping myself but others
(hey isnt this the basic fuction of ametuer radio operators...lol)
i will add more questions in the future..not to worry..lol
Later
